Yes I agree that the roots are a bit odd and unbalancing to the tree as a whole.

How would you go about fixing such a problem?

Expose the cambium, pack the gap with sphagnum moss, cover with cut paste, then press some pieces of bark into the cut paste to disguise it a little.

Great thread. Cool idea. Here is a juniper I got in Chinatown, Philly. It was in a 3" planter when I bought it. Found this pot in same store. It is my first bonsai project.

IMPO, bougainvillea are hard to beat as flowering bonsai. your red is a case in point. the colors are bright and so vivid, the eye goes first there.

Wow---What can you tell us about your Doug Fir. I had one that was lost to the Viet Nam War. They are not common as bonsai and I have not been able to figure out why.

I plan on starting a thread for this Dougie shortly. I can say that they are quickly growing in popularity here in the Rockies. A lot of Colorado folks are using these, and several of us are collecting them.

Nice dougy Dan, I has no doubt whatsoever that Doug firs will soon be amongst the best bonsai in N.A. They have an uncanny tendency to produce classic moyogi style trunks in the wild, have great bark and have a greater ability to backbud than any other conifer in my area. her here's a nice trunk, hard to see it the only pic I have available ATM.

The firs look good. I've seen a few on display here in Rochester (National exhibition and local club show) and they do make nice bonsai...would like to find a decent specimen, either douglas or balsam.
