Do it. Mine wont end up 4ft, I can tell you that, and I'll probably end up with a bigger one after the festivities as well.ok, ok..
Went out and visited a number of shops selling christmasjunk today. And.. did not find a single tree. All of them have been pulled out of the ground and pushed into a pot to sell over christmas. All of them having the warning that these are not grown to be planted in the garden and there is no guarantees on survival. Considering how most of them are standing in a sheet of dry needles gives me a good indication of survival chances of the bigger trees.
I am not participating with a 1ft potgrown plant, as I know it will annoy me in a few months to be given away. I prefer to have bigger trees. I have been looking at 5ft - 7ft trees: Starting with a 6ft tree will get a bonsai of about 1-2ft, which would be about right.
Nice cheers for that. Even looks a bit like how mine has started out and is similar to how I hope to style it. Thanks for the lesson in patience! Not participating, but here's what can be done with Christmas spruces. It's about 4.5 years in training now. I started with a winter repot too, removed tons of roots and tons of little white grubs. It didn't grow at all the following year but budding was good so the next winter I decided to style it. It worked out, thankfully, and it went growing again. Next time I'd leave another year, or maybe even 2 inbetween, it might take up growing more quickly and more strongly. Anyway, here's a pic:

It needs detail work and last twig adjustments, but I hope to get it in a nice pot first, this spring.

Heh, yes for the contest. That was the first one I saw too after I picked mine up, but I want to make it a little more sparse and weather beaten I guess, if I can keep it alive that is! Still great to look at his for inspiration. I have read that they are not the easiest tres, but I do really like Spruce as bonsai. They seem to look more natural (if that’s the right word) than some other conifers and that’s my preferred style generally. Thanks for the nice words, much appreciated! The big inspiration for mine was that famous spruce by Walter Pall, that's an awesome tree. Mine has now taken a different direction, but I still like to look and compare lol. You are talking about your contest entry, right? I'm curious to see it develop, that's fosho! Spruces are still a bit weird to me, but they can be wonderful bonsai.
