Stewartia Monadelpha

Yeah, they look smaller in the ground, and when you get them in a pot, it’s like, “holy crap, what am I getting myself into?”
You might want to get those exposed roots covered for a few months until it gets established.

I thought about that too. But the pot is filled to the top. Do you suggest I mount the soil higher or use moss?

I'd do both. You can build up the soil and keep it in place with plastic screen shoved into/along the edge of the pot, then cover with shredded sphagnum moss. Either that, or cut some 2x4s to size that mirror the pot edge and screw together. Good luck with it... great trunk.

Good idea! I will try to do it today. Sounds like another trip to Home Depot!

Good plan...then start a new thread on it so you can update it over time.😉 I haven’t started one on my JBP from there yet, but when I finally make a styling move I will.

Just did under pine. Hope I can document this tree for a long long time.

Looking good Brian! Jealous she's fully leafed and needed a trim so far. My large field grown Stewartia is maybeeee 1/3rd to leafed out so far up here in NH. Lots of new buds from the cutback and seems to be off to a good start after transferring from the field soil to an anderson flat this Spring. Seems like you are training your branching to be a bit more horizontal than the typical upward flame like shape that you see a lot of Stewartias with? I'm trying to decide what type of form to take mine with currently.

Monitoring the wires thru leaves that dense must be hard! Looking great Brian! Mines finally pushing a lot of extension with this warm 80s weather we've had. Seems pretty happy with the repotting I did this spring.

We had our first freeze this AM, it’s 30f now, so I took some photos yesterday in case the cold zapped the leaves. So far, they seem to be ok, but here is a shot from yesterday. I’m really looking forward to seeing the progress of branching development from this year.

Mine is the same color but I forgot to take a pic…
Yours look amazing!

Looks great Bri! Great match with the pot. Just got one from Bjorn. Been wanting one for a long time. The copper-red bark is simply beautiful!
You’re gonna love working with it, if you haven’t. They’re strong growers and very responsive to training, rewarding. Can’t wait to see yours.
