Squirrels!!

Hunters will even tell you the taste of the meat changes when they have been eating it . .............. Because deer in general only eat it when preferred foods not avail . It’s a winter staple for them out of necessary .

I did NOT actually know these two things.... But they make perfect sense when given consideration.

Surprised by your answer . Your ancestors referred to thuja as the tree of life . There is multiple reasons for this .it’s endurance in harsh conditions . And long life . Are part of it . But also it’s nutritional aspect . Very rich in several vitamins . Including C . They famously cured French explorers of scurvy with tea from its leaves . Go ahead and try it . I have . Recommend young growth . Remember I did not say it tastes good 😎😎😎😎

My uncle retired born and raised in the Ottawa valley woods . Life long outdoorsman . Was telling me only this last Christmas’s . That it has only been since his retirement that he has learned . A bunch about animal activity . Especially white tail deer . Because he has the time to just observe . For hours at a time . In the deep woods . 2 surprises for him were . Mature buck deer . Late winter. Using his hooves to wound a sugar maple tree . And suck the sap out . Then both red maple and black cherry . Go down a branch and nibble the buds off with such delicacy . That there was no bark disturbed just buds gone . .

I'd been sprinkling cayenne with varying success but it can be a bit messy and promote mold if you get too heavy handed...I've recently made a cayenne concoction in a spray bottle and have been misting the yard. Glad I don't have pets, you actually get a tingle on your tongue stepping back there when it's active. Buds are beginning to pop so I'll monitor this closely and will probably have to be more frequent applications once the seasonal rains begin.

Recipe for squirrel?

Clean the animal, place on cedar plank. Salt and pepper to taste. Grill on high heat for 10 minutes, then remove from heat. Throw the squirrel in the trash where it belongs and eat the cedar plank.

😜

My Grandma fried it, then put it the pressure cooker. You had to eat it gingerly or break a tooth on buckshot.

My grandmother used to make "game stew"... And she'd stir it with a magnet or some magnetized stick "thingie"... It got out SOME of the shrapnel. 🤓

EDIT:.. Just asked my dad about this and he said, "buck/game shot wouldn't STICK to the magnet, but the magnet would move it all to one side. Apparently Gramma would then pick them out! 🤣

In the past I used to dispatch them with a pellet gun. I have a 14 year old, half chihuahua/ half pug, dog with a fondness for fresh squirrel. When I'd shoot one she would rung grab it, carry it off and methodically eat the head - nothing else. Completely; skull, brain, eyes, teeth, everything - then casually walk off and leave it behind. Then...a younger toy Australian Shepherd would carry off the carcass and gingerly pull out the innards through the neck hole and eat them. They worked quite well together in eliminating 50% of the squirrel. Then the wife found out about our little arrangement and, well, I still haven't finished cleaning everything off the fan...

My sling shot and blow gun also work very well. The sling shot takes some practice and so does the blow gun but they are both whisper quiet :)
There is a wicked sense of accomplishment when you drop a squirrel from a tree and another one right next to it doesn't know a thing.
I use the clay balls that way a close shot still scares them. They jump around with the WTF look.

There are a couple of people in the neighborhood feeding squirrels. The squirrels love to bury peanuts in my potted plants. The other stuff isn’t a big concern, but i can't have that business in my bonsai. I wrapped 1/4" hardware cloth around the pot. The cloth naturally wants to curl around the pot. It isn’t fastened, so it comes off easily if needed. Watering is easy with the cloth in place. I cut the cloth with tin snips, so there are tiny little sharp wire sticking up along the top edge to discourage tree rats. And if you are feeding raccoons, remember this… almost all adult raccoons carry roundworms. An adult raccoon can release one million roundworm eggs each day in it's feces. If children play in the yard and then put their fingers in their mouth, they can get the roundworms. EF258177-B328-4B1A-BC12-0749C72BE31D.jpeg

That is an AWESOME snake, by the way!

I remember, moving from Norfolk to Detroit area at about 6 years old, and my parents saying, "now you can trust the bugs and reptiles more!"

🤣🤣
Horselover Fat, I wasn't offended. Anything humane beats cruel methods so if pee and the other stuff works I'd vote for that.

No issue .. sometimes not being taken seriously really "gets my goat"... But it's a grave I dig myself!

🤣🤣🤪

Just moved to a new place that has squirrels. So far they've knocked over a couple of pots and stolen all the acorns I was germinating. Soooo not gonna love this.

I finally built some easily-removable cages to surround my young trees that squirrels were damaging. PVC and chicken wire...

Back when I was trapping raccoons regularly, I tried to get a rabies vaccine. It seemed prudent, since I was trapping raccoons to thin the population specifically because of a rabies outbreak. I couldn’t get it. They won’t administer it to humans unless you’ve already been bitten. I just had to be extra careful.
It is not true here that you can't get a rabies vaccination without a prior bite. My wife made a trip to the Amazon and our local Dr. that does vaccinations for travelers recommended and gave her rabies vaccination as a precaution. It is routine that people with high risk of exposure, like veterinarians, wildlife biologists, etc. can get rabies vaccines. Sometimes a vaccination after a bite can be too late, if the bite is on the face where it is a short distance from the bite to the brain.

As recently reported in Science and PNAS, there is a study that estimates that whitetail deer represent 10% of the total biomass of wild land mammals on earth. All those deer have to eat quite a bit of something.
