Shohin crabapple with fruit

Am interested in seeing a photo before carving... that is if you have any.
I really like this little tree.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks namnhi! Unfortunately I do not have any previous records of this tree. In all my years with it, this is the first time it has been photographed :(

Found this on Sam and KJ's blog just now:

Wonderful tree. Great job! Do you know the spp. /cultivar?

Beautiful composition. I really love the simplicity. You have it spot on. The goal of bonsai this small is to evoke a feeling or emotion on the viewer. Basically it is the essence of a tree not a direct replication of one. Any more branches and the image would be cluttered. Well done.

Thanks fh05! Sorry I don't. Perhaps someone else might?

Thanks Tom I appreciate the comment! You are right sir! :)

Update

And yet another Spring for this old crabapple shohin. It flowers consistently year after year. I think this time I'll let it make a few more fruits as compared to last year. I always love the contrast between the flowers and fresh Spring leaves against the old trunk. It's a wonderful time of the year!! :o

Great tree and terrific pictures. Thank you for sharing.

If I had one critique of the tree, hope you don't mind, it would be that the pot is too "new" feeling.

I agree. The tree is just so nice and though it can stand on its own w/o any help...I believe it deserves a better pot. :)

Thanks for sharing. Lots of beautiful faces on this little tree between being bare, having fruit, and flowering.

Thanks guys for the nice comments and yes, even for the criticism. I appreciate it. Brian Underwood also pointed this out earlier in this thread. If you guys saw where this tree was planted before you might like this pot a little more :D But point well taken and I also agree!

Thanks NY12! Yes, the different phases of many fruiting/flowering trees is fascinating. They can/do look completely different at various times of the year.

This is part of what bonsai is all about. Nature up close and personal.

Hello Mach5.. Stunning tree.. Really nice. Similar to the ones you see in Japan. As far as the pot, I like it very much. In my opinion, I think it is a good choice. The light color compliments the tree's flowers and fruit very well, while still letting the tree be the main focus. The light color on the pot makes for a beautiful combination. As you probably know, many times, pot colors are picked so they contrast well with the flower color on the tree.

Beautiful tree and photography.

Thanks Rob! Glad you like it. I bought this little guy back in Spring '99. I ended up not liking it very much at all, and the poor thing always found a place at the back of my garden. Didn't pay too much attention to it. That is until... I had an Aha! moment last year when I picked it up one day and really looked at it closely. The idea was to carve out the entire length of the trunk to give it the interest it needed. As it was, it simply was too plain and boring. With not much to loose, I went for it. Wouldn't you know it, it is now a favorite of mine and I don't even really like crabapples LOL!!

Anyway, about the pot choice. Well... these things are so darn subjective! I do agree that perhaps it does need to be a bit more "rugged" to blend in more with the whole image. Contrast as you point out, is also a good thing. But here it is maybe a wee bit too much of a "perfect" pot for such a rugged trunk. Regardless, happy you agreed with the choice! :o

I have to say, that I love the pot too. It adds a charm to the presentation that I don't know you'd have with a more rugged pot. But it's all a personal taste thing for sure.

...what Rob said...great combination.

This is a good example of a rugged fruiting tree in a nice pot. I believe this one is from Japan. The combination is similar to yours.

Since you're getting some contradictory responses to my critique of the pot, please let me clarify. Not that I hate being wrong, but, darn it, I think I'm right ;) I love the color of the pot and think it's spot on. But something about the pot makes it feel like it is brand new (the shininess of the glaze, the crispness of the corners, the white on the bottom, something?), and I don't think that's appropriate for this tree. I think a pot like this one, which is similar to yours but looks aged, would be more fitting.

A virt with your pot choice...:D

Your pot is very nice. However, I think I still like the pot the tree is in better.
