What's the process like for transferring something like this from the ground to such a small pot? Did you do periodic root work while it was in the ground?

Yes! Otherwise I would have had to go down in pot size gradually.

What do you do to encourage fine roots close to the base? Is it simply a matter of pruning away coarse roots when you work the roots, or is it more complicated than that?
