This was the first bonsai I ever did back in 2002. Of course, when I started this thing I didn't know the first thing about bonsai nor did I realize that typically bonsai were any bigger than around 6 inches tall. After ten years in a tiny little pot it still isn't any larger than it was back then and the trunk hasn't thickened to any noticeable degree. However, I like to think that it has come a long way in becoming a somewhat respectable tree. I have killed countless trees since I started this guy, but somehow he has survived to see my obsession in this hobby go far beyond what I imagined it ever would. Although this isn't my favorite tree, by any means, it still holds a special place in my heart as the one that started it all.

Nice post and nice tree. I wish I had my first tree, but that died many moons ago.

Thanks for posting.

It certainly is nice for someones first tree...
Could you possibly lift it up out of the pot a bit, so there is space between the trunk and the pot lip? Kind of do an U shape (upside down of course) between the base and the cascade part? Hope you understand what I mean... And if you could do some exposed gnarly roots at the base, it might appear more powerful.
It's come quite a long ways already. Would be fun to see this one in 20 years...

Awesome that you still have your fist tree, not many of us can say that- I can't.
As I mentioned in the boxwood post wiring every single branch that's hard enough and putting them exactly where you want will greatly improve this tree. I know no can get more out of it you just need to get past wiring as work you don't like to do.

It does need to be off the pot lip. It is a nice tree and as has been said its not too many who can claim they have their first tree, if any.
