Had to do the next chop this morning, before that section gets any thicker. I'll probably bring it down a little lower once it pops new buds. It has also smoothed out the transition from the previous segment pretty well already.

Next thing I need is a bud to start a branch on the outside of that curve; the latest beheading should stimulate a few.

I'll be looking for another this weekend. They are one cool elm to work with. The small leaves are the clincher. They help the tree look more like a tree since they are in scale with bonsai sized trees.

The lengths of your chops need to diminish with each successive chop. The last chop you did is too long for the chop below it. The last chop needs to be half its length.
Now you have to make a decision. Based on trunk diameter the tree is almost now too tall. If you are keeping the trunk this size do not allow the top to grow any more height, chop the last leader in half and build the canopy very shallow or it will look like a giraffe, and that is not cool.
If you were hoping to have a larger trunk, you screwed up and chopped the tree stopping its growth and any future ideas on making it larger.
Other than that, carry on.

I'm right there with you Al. Regarding the latest cut - that's what I meant by "I'll probably bring it down a little lower once it pops new buds." Your suggestion of about half its current length is right in line with my thinking.
I knew when I chopped it the first time that I was "dooming" it to be a taller thinner tree, and I'm ok about that. I harbor no delusions about it magically getting significantly thicker ( though I am letting a few little sacrifices grow for giggles). As a taller and thinner person, I can't complain too much about it

What amazes me....is that shoot is about as long as my power leaf shoot.
Except....this one has no less than 25 branches and 400 leaves. Mine has 7-10
Leaves, and that one branch.
Roughly the same surface area!
Amen to the tiny leaves!
If I find a nice one at the Midwest Bonsai Society show.....I might buy it!

The ones I have seen there are just to small for me. My feet don't have as many years walking around on the sunny side of dirt to wait for the trunks to get a large enough caliber on them that I would want.
