Security cameras, fake or real?

Get a fake camera, motion sensor lights and a shotgun.
Shotgun can get messy and may damage the trees! I bet the perpetrator will drop the tree at the sound of a 12 gauge being chambered though. LOL :p

They will not. You will have to spend several hours trying to describe to these guys how valuable they are and how trying to find them is worth the effort. Been there done that!!
As posted, I also think that is the case.

Being in TX, people know we are legally allowed to protect our self and property with deadly force if necessary. I am hoping it doesn't come to that and that the would be crooks don't see messing with some trees worth the risk.

I also have a State trooper living near me and usually parks her cruiser in front of my yard...I hope that is deterrent enough.

On the other hand if you sit out on your porch and clean your guns that may send a message that you might not be someone to casually mess with, or that you are one of these survivalist nuts.

Hey, I take offense to that. ;) (joking) I honestly prepare for some scenario and I am sure I can survive longer than most of my neighbors in case of a disaster...but I do not take it to the extreme. Haven't dug an underground shelter yet. LOL :p

Underground shelters and fortresses are just invitations to a siege by someone who does not wish you well and has enough help to assure you do not prevail. Here again it is the message you send to those outside. Unless you think you are Lionidess (sp?) and your position is defensable against an army it is best to not have that as your first and last resort. When you retreat to a position everyone who does not like you will know exactly where you are at. In the end instead of having a fortress you will have a jail and shooting gallery.

Here is one of my security systems. He is German Shepherd and English Mastiff. He was free. Awesome deterrent. That's my wife in the picture. She's full grown.

My obvious presence of firearms because I do all the gun cleaning outdoors(fluids stink) and having a Chow Chow for 16 years has worked well. I am looking into the cable companies system at the new place though as he passed last August. I find it kind of cool that the newest pro systems really do not show themselves and you have wireless access on most any device. I must admit though having the presence of a quiet "not trusted breed" of dog seems to be VERY effective.

Which is more dangerous?

I would think that a auditory alarm from some sort of trip that could be set might be a good deterrent for thieves, if a dog isn't allowed.

Judy,

Good idea.

Can you suggest a set up? Are there waterproof/weatherproof pressure sensitive switches out there? I am thinking of a switch that is normally compressed and sets off when relieved (i.e. a pot on it is lifted).

I may go this route if it is easy & affordable to do. I would imagine that, coupled with motion activated flood light will be a good system.

Why not hook an audible up to a simple motion detector?

Because I don't want a cat waking the neighborhood. :p

I am thinking a simpler version is running a wire that will get tugged (and setting the alarm) when the pot is taken...

As an officer I thought I would respond. If you want to get a video a camera, thats fine, say if there are a string of thefts in the neighborhood video footage would be helpfull. They might not be able to id the suspect right away, but if they stumbled upon someone with your trees it would be nice to have the footage to place them there at the crime.

Personally I would not use a trail camera. They are easy to break into. If you did you would need to make sure the area is lighted very good and turn off the flash.

It would be my hope that the department would take a report on the theft. I know recently the rocky mountain bonsai society had two of their memorial trees stolen. Now fortunately the trees were returned, but I know a report was taken. Perhaps to help an officer that doesnt believe the value, show them a web site with prices.

Probably the best options are to make the yard look inconspicuous and get a dog. Unfortunatley you cant get the dog.

I feel that with good electronics well placed and well thought about I will not be replacing my Dog of 16 years. He did his job and remains my best friend although he is gone. Properly done and taken care of I am certain that reasonable electronics can and do help law enforcement coupled with people that care...

As an owner of 2 german shepherds, they are very protective of 'their yard' which is great. Bad thing about dogs, just to make you feel better, the dogs will eat bonsai soil. So no trees low, or on the ground. There's pro's and con's of any 'security' ;)

I would do it just like an in house system, put a contact detector on my gate, if the connection is broken after it's set, then the alarm goes off. Unless you have no gate... If you have no gate, then I'd start there... fences, lights and gates are all obstacles that thieves avoid.

Thanks. I'll check. I am after the actual performance though (not looks) and doubt something that cheap can deliver that. If it does, I'll jump on it. :)

Well, I cannot vouch for performance as that isn't something I purchased, but I have done a fair amount of selling and buying on ebay and seen a bunch of systems with similar looking cameras and a similar number of cameras for sale at drastically reduced prices.

I think a lot of people on there are getting overflow from big box stores or items that were returned never used, so you can frequently get insane deals on electronics that are very good name brands! If I see a good one I will try to post a link for you.

I used before a motion activated light, simply got a wire in series from one of the lights and connected to the power supply of a small radio at home. But you can easily connect a siren. Any one moves at night the siren comes on and you can adjust the light for dogs so they dont affect it. I put a sticker on the light sensor, since the light comes only at night so I am alerted even during the day.
The radio was USD10 and the wire too.
