concerning roots, next spring, remove all the soil, and see what can be cut (if possible cut/reduce the big vertical roots) but, of course, keep enough fine roots for the tree to survive ^^Think overall with what everyone has outlined my favorites are 6 and the new line you identified. Or a possible lower chop, just worried about the time it would take to heal.
Was also hoping to cut the pot/ root mass in half. Would this be advisable? Can make a few cuttings from the top section of the trunk to use as root grafts.
Just my opinion, but the trunk line i prefer is the one with the virtual (post #17) or your last pic message 18 (right pic).
I wouldn't chop this big trunk. The main work on the trunk will consist in refining the bulge/reverse tapper, imo. I prefer to perform the big cuts in june/july because there is no sap issue (no sap withdrawal, no sap flow) and the tree heals (make new scars) very quickly.
