Scarred with a uro completely through scarred trunk Japanese maple

When I wired this out...I was paying close attention to the thicker branch. It was not going to lower and bend to the left for the lower section of tree. It was raised well above my comfort for the overall image in leaf.

Studying it...I wasn't wishing to prune it off either..so amused with the scarring and what not. I decided to...yup snap it intentionally. 🤣🙃. But then tossed wire on it to keep it from moving more. As well as coated the break with Gorilla glue. It's all waking just fine. And I'm amused by my direction...as it's not one I would suggest for one to do. But felt the trees story could carry the move.

Snapping. I like that. Well described. Coming out of a winter of heavy snowfall I’m sure I’ll find lots of snapping results growing around me for inspiration.

😉😁... liked that did ya?

...won't lie...I did it with much pleasure and a face splitting grin. As it truly is not what we would typically want to do with deciduous trees. But it's a tree that can carry the story. I love going off the beaten path. Also quite happy with the final look.

Hope not in your collection...those snapping results.

@Cadillactaste ... 🤔... didn't expect that from you but... I can understand your reasons 🙃.
Not related to your maple but... today I found my Japanese Hawthorn was really pushing the buds - bursting out like lilies or magnolia blooms just opening. Decided to trim back and wire for some styling... snapped three branches from the joints off the main branches they where attached to... 😪. Disappointed with myself but decided to think "these things happen for a reason".

Fully severed? Because...won't lie...My bougainvillea cascade has been superglued a lot. For partially snapped branches in styling. A bit on the hardwood. Will hold it together to allow it to heal.

Now I love Hawthorn.... have you shared it here? I'll have to look it up after I spend a bit more time in the office.

First for me to intentionally snap a branch. It was so enjoyable. 🤣🙃.. I don't tend to push my trees past points. But...it needed to be brought down. I would never be satisfied with it had I not.

Yeah... sadly 99.9% snapped... tiny sliver of bark holding.

Because of trying to wire to change directions I couldn't see it holding in place whichever method I tried - I've managed to heal broken/snapped branches and trunks with PTFE tape (used by plumbers to wrap around threads for pipework joints) in the past.

I can live with the branches removed. May even help with the development of the Hawthorn. This is a Japanese Hawthorn (Crataegus 'crenata' not 'monogyna'), can grow quite fast and I'll need to watch to remove the wires. Already have some small scarring after not keeping an eye on it 😪

I don't think I've shared here in the past but can do. Probably as a new thread rather than here in your post - don't want to be seen to hijack and divert away from your maple.

Have you seen the link in my Facebook group in the featured area on healing wire scars? 😉

I believe it's "A trick for correcting wire a wire scarred branch"? Yes... I bought some of the treatment for applying 🙏👍. I did follow the procedure and applied some of the treatment but it got washed off by dome rain a few hours later. I'll be trying again when there's better weather.

You all see a lot of rain your way.

I’m using your snapping lawlessness as a purposely selected form of tree work moving forward. Trees all around me in nature have beautiful elaborate broken branch, and trunk, features. I seem to always admire those trees the most….those trees draw my attention. I often wish I could replicate those weather-toughened looks. Yet, I find myself on my deciduous bonsai trees trying to make everything smooth and flawless….pruned for the perfect rollover….featureless…unnatural….trees just don’t grow like that around me. And, knowing I’m really the only one to see my trees, it’s time I embraced a snappy habit and stop trying for smoothed around perfection. Thanks for your inspiration and candid commentary…..Mighty Fine!

Well... now. You intend to devote a specific tree as such and create also a trunk to go with it? You mentioned trunk as well.

Won't lie... "Snapping Lawlessness" has a ring to it. 🙃 but there is definitely a time and place, and story that needs told. Just as flawless trees have their place

I'm very pleased at the side by side comparison of the tree I brought in last year. And this year as it's waking up. Seeing the silhouette coming together. Love I was able to bring that canopy over the trunk some. Now to allow it to develop and build more structure.

Perhaps rethinking several trees I have. I’m growing out of the belief that every pruned branch and trunk needs to be set just perfect….the right cutting to produce a perfect rollover….the right angle for a perfect blend…and the right hiding in the back so no one sees the cut (even though I am the only one looking). As I’ve pruned in recent years, I have regretted the flush perfect cutting…I keep repeating the attempted-perfection cuts mindlessly. I need to step back and stop. I always admire rugged rough trees in the wild, yet I try in a small size to eliminate the ruggedness and attempt hiding the richness of a realistic tree. Some might see ruggedness as a flaw….I choose to see the ruggedness as natural beauty. So, I’m rethinking my approach….to my trees….one at a time.

I seldom, if ever at all, admire a tree in nature that is perfectly formed. Instead, I admire the scrappy tree of character….the tree with a tainted story to be seen.

Ahhh totally understand. I rarely grab the concave cutters for a preferred stub scar. 🙃... but I've always strayed off the beaten path.

I'll say this. Trees have flaws. I get a chuckle when one sees my tree and can only find the fault. Like my Tim Burton Acer. People want to tame it. That will never happen while on my bench. This one important branch on this tree. Breaches the gap of upper and lower canopy. Its straight with no taper. Bugs people. Lol I chuckle...if they get distracted by one straight section when the entire tree is nothing but scars and coolness. I'd anything I'll scar it. 😉 not remove it. Now I can see scarring. But I find it so amusing that I find flaws part of the charm. My mindset has truly changed and evolved.

Total agreement.

Totally smitten with this one. Brought it inside yesterday as it really captured my attention in the greenhouse.

Again links can be viewed by anyone. You do not need an account for a direct link.

I had applied vinegar to the moss of this JM...and got busy with other things needing done. I finally got tired of looking at the dead moss on the trunk. Brought it in to remove and clean up. Decided on not using my backdrop. As it hides the character in the trunk. Which are complete pass through areas where you can see through it.

And my Instagram post today of a snippet of video focusing on the trunk more than overall tree. Yet...I do step back for a full shot.

Mighty fine! Outstanding character and detail management.

Trying to come up with a title...as, this is actually the third JM, I own with scars on the trunk. 🙃

Yeah...I know...deciduous tree and all. But that's quite okay by me. 😉😁

My latest...arrival.

Having read through most of comments here on your post... it's a beautiful work of art by the way...

Have you already moved on from creating your own bonsai to work on older pieces... or.. are you a collector of art?
