Dig up a bit of that bentonite clay soil common in your area and smear it on the pipe. Then let it just sit out in the air. Dampen it before it gets dry. A bit of salt won't hurt, but isn't essential.

Cool idea. Eco friendly too. Ive been using the vapor cooker part of a rice cooker for a couple trees. There aluminium. The rice cookers died so why not? Recycling is good. Maybe hook up some of the mesh Source uses to make metal collanders, it should make a good bottom.
