Years ago I found a red maple. And wanted to root it higher than the soil level. I chose to build up the soil around the tree trunk so the new ground level was about an inch over where I wanted the nee roots to form. I used natural fertile soil from the growing area. I created a new circle of soil for about two foot out all around. Then I pulled the soil away from the trunk and removed a oneand a half inch ring around the bark. I scraped and cleaned the inner trunk so there was no cambium at all left on the ring. I returned the soil back around the trunk. Packed it down to semi solid. Covered the entire new soil area with leaves and whatever was around. Watered it and let the natural soil moisture take over. I did return a few times with water because of a hot spring dry spell. The new roots grew very well. I saw cut the ground trunk away in early autumn. I used a tool to nibble away the trunk remains under the new tree up to where the new roots formed. The ground layer worked better for me.
