Lol! Too funny!
I'll take a peen!
Hahaha!

Nah seriously though, I'd love a pot!
...hmm, buff clay for the purple cow?! Sounds awesome!

I'm in Maryland as well. Planning to get my non-hardy plants in today. I have a Fukien, aloe and jade that I'm going to build a light box setup for.
Ya know, I definitely could have waited longer this year, but all 3 of mime started growing better once I brought them inside....hope that trend continues over the winter....cuz I chopped my bougie!

I'm hoping mine respond well to the move. I'd like to do some experimenting with the Fukien tea if it takes the move well. This was my first season of bonsai so I'm not sure how they will take it. I have lots other plants that I overwinter every year though and only 1 has died so I'm feeling cautiously optimistic.

Looking very nice.

Another odd year... I think we did something to piss-off Mother Nature.

Yeah it was an experiment. I wanted to see how it would hold up. Not well it turns out! The joints are starting to fail. The splines will hold it together until I put it in something else.

If I were going to try a pot in wood, I would construct it like normal, but then seal the whole thing in a penetrating clear epoxy - almost like I was building a wooden boat. Sand it down after the epoxy cures and as long as the epoxy was thin enough, it should have a buff/eggshell finish. Not sure how it would handle changes in temp, but it should at least be impervious to water and changes in humidity.

I used 10 coats of exterior grade polyurethane. The problem is just that a complete 100% seal is just about impossible. Once the temperature changes caused the wood to move, the joints opened slightly. Once the first joint started to open the pot was subject to humidity changes and all the joints opened. In the end I decided I wasn't nuts about it anyway. It looks far to bulky. It was a fun thing to try regardless. I'll stick with normal pots from now on.

You might get better results with a turned bowl? I'm just trying to sound positive :) I work with wood on occasion and I wouldn't recommend it for bonsai pots... but I had never really considered it until I saw yours :)

A turned bowl would definitely produce better results. Pretty good idea. Unfortunately I don't own a lathe and my wife has forbidden me from buying new tools or trees until we buy a house (hopefully any day now)
