Radialayer™ a season saver.

So basically you are taking the Chinese method of making 'centipede' roots such as done on adeniums and pairing it up with air layering. Nifty. I like it. It does seem smart that if you want your roots to radiate out rather than to grow into a round ball, you do need to add something to keep them radiating out flat. Seems worth the few minutes extra effort. Very clever.

Air layer question, I had a layer fail kinda where it regrew on one side and now has a nice fat connecting trunk. the rest that I removed the bark on is dead wood. If I want to retry do I have to get all around the new regenerated part or just what I can see? I want to redo it at the same site as the trunk above the old layer did fatten up a lot and would look good down the road as the base of the tree. just didn't know if the tree healed all the way around or just the outside surface. I can get a pic Saturday if I am not being clear.

I would recut the entire ring.

otherwise....

The old healed will start rooting while the new cut is healing.

It is more likely to be lopsided.

most of the ring seems to be dead, except the fat side that regrew. I will do that since I'd have to cover it all anyway. I will post a pic later.

Vance and I were wondering if you were thinking of coming to the show again this year?
We need to be better prepared to exhibit your wares for the public to peruse.

I have some vacation time saved for then so I will be there a day before and a day after the show.
I'll be putting in an appearance at Leo's if he thinks I'm worthy if that's the case.
Oh boy!

Mike, don't be silly, of course you are worthy, one name for my orchid business was "White Trash Orchids", with a name like that you think I could afford to be snobbish? SHoot me dates in a PM, I'll add them to my calendar. We will make it work, @sorce, yourself, and anyone else. Just PM me for address.

Will do Leo.
I'll get a date and let you know.
I don't get out much.
This show is actually the one time of the year they let me out in public,so I like to make the best out of it.

I should be there again as well. Hope to hang out a bit more this time. Hoping my Sister is out of the hospital and things are a bit more back to normal by then (should be). If things can get back to normal soon I'd like to finally become a paid member of the club because I would like to put my ficus forest in the show. It's nothing special but looks decent and I think it'd just be neat to be a part of things with it perhaps.

What show are you guys talking about? I must have missed the post about it :|

Hmm, I think you are trying to (re)invent something that has been invented and produced on a mass scale ;-) Not trying to make advertisement for a site but have a look on these pages. I also copied few pictures from there. And the prices are cheap...

The Radialdisk™ is my fake patent!

I purchased some of these rooter pots last year. Will report on performance end of this summer hopefully, but at least superficially these do not look like a substitute for what @sorce is demonstrating...UNLESS I block off the water reservoirs to avoid getting all the roots running into them...maybe with something disk-shaped...and radial...

I noticed now that the thread is from 2014 - probably years before this thing became commercially available. And maybe I am missing the irony in your answer ;-)

I purchased 5 big and 5 small ones to test. Mainly want to try it on various Prunus Mume varieties I have growing on some understock. Going to test soon, will also let know on how it worked. The reservoirs are there to maintain certain levels of moisture in whole container but let excess go away. @sorce says in the introduction to create drainage holes into container so in a way it is similar to this one.

@R3x the Radialdisk is the 3rd layer...

This commercial unit has a top and a bottom, it's for regular propagation.

The Radialdisk is what keeps your roots going outward...not down.
Bonsai propagation.

I don't know when who thought what...
I hope ot doesn't seem that way!

But I have never seen anything but bags and foil before this, unfortunately, most bonsai folks (except a select few here)still just propagate for bonsai like a Damn fruit grafter....
And by fruit grafter I mean......lol!

I'm afraid the reservoirs are a problem because the roots will run into them, then when the container is opened they are at risk of damage. Obviously, I bought them anyway so I see the potential and figured they were worth trying. Looking forward to comparing notes.
