Quick Help on an impulse Oak purchase

Don't do any more chopping at this point. Next spring look for low buds, within four inches of the base. That may or may not happen. Trees like this usually push most of their buds near the major chop site. If you don't see any, you might have to wait until the following year to do another low chop. You've gotten the tree at a tricky point in the year. You've topped it, which is a stressful thing that the tree needs to recover from and (to quote a popular HBO series "Winter is coming."

At this point, I'd worry more about getting the tree growing strongly as is. Have you looked at the roots? They're more important than a future chop. You might have to repot next spring into better soil and work on the root mass before proceeding with any more top design work.

So I will be honest with you guys. Despite everything you guys have said... All day I've been thinking about and leaning to chopping again.

I cleaned off the top of the soil and took a few minutes to breathe. Pulled it out of the pot. It was in a bark/dirt mix. I just tossed a finelayer of garden soil, compost, and perlite on the top. Less than 1/4 inch (really just for aesthetic purposes) Finally got a good look at the bark upclose. Just enjoyed the tree for the first time.

You guys are right nothing else needs to be done this year. Thank you EVERYONE!

You're flirting with a basic beginner mistake--futzing around too much with the tree. The urge you're feeling to top it again is a symptom of this problem. You're trying to make it artistically better without considering basic horticulture. Horticulture is the foundation of bonsai. Art is second. Keep messing with the tree and you won't get to the second part...

Understood. I'm done.

Just watering from here on, and maybe a little fertilizer towards the end of August when I start fertilizing again. Here it sits all cleaned up!

Yeah apparently there was an earthquake. I didn't feel it, but there was a bunch of power outages from what I understand. It calmed down for a while, but I believe this is #2 in 2 days.... I also heard the oil fields recently started back up also.... probably just coincidence though :confused:
