anyone have any maples they stared from seeds? I really want one. My dad has a red maple in his yard. I would like to plant some of his seeds as well. I was reading to wait till fall for this.

You can dot it in early Spring too, but the seeds are generally able to be collected in Fall.

JM do not usually come true to the parent from seed. So much cross breeding happens with them, you have no idea what you will get when you grow one from seed... Cuttings are a more reliable method of propagation. Cuttings and air layers... Now is a fine time to start those in my area also.

I'd love to get something going in spring. Could I take a piece off my dads full size red and start that?

Are you talking about the cultivar Blood Good? If so you can collet the seeds and get a lot of new Maples. However they are so variable from seed you have no way of knowing what you are going to get from germinated seeds. I grew a batch of Atropurpurum a number of years ago. No two trees were the same and not one of them was a red strain. Never the less I had a lot of fun fooling around with them, I sold most of them made some money doing it and I still have a couple left.

Yeah I'll be happy just to grow something. I ordered seeds online for the purple maple. So we will see. Im completely green on growing any type of plant.

Well I ordered the purple online. And I'm not sure what type my father has. It's a Japanese Maple. He asked if I can keep it from growing any taller. I haven't looked at it yet. And I have no practice in such a thing.

Speaking of which. Can you buy a 4" maple and make it a bonsai? Cut it down and start it over from the trunk?

image.png eBay. Coming from overseas. It may not even be legit but 3.42 for 6 seeds I figured wth. I hope like hell they work though.

Bro, you got seriously ripped!

They certainly will not look like that, they will likely be a standard green color. The photo is a result of photoshop, sadly.

And they spelled it palatum?

Be very careful buying seeds on Ebay. Especially from China. You may order maple and get zucchini!
Also, Maple seeds lose their viability very quickly if they dry out too much. When you get them (if you get them and they are actually maple) soak them in very hot water and leave overnight then stratify in the fridge in damp vermiculite for a couple of months. You should really get your seed either from a tree or from a reputable seed merchant.

4" diameter?
Yes,thar how it's done.
Saves all the waiting time for them to grow so you can chop them.

That's how it is when you buy a plant for landscape use. Sometimes there's no any other choice. Few years ago I bought Coral bark jap. maple (sango-kaku) 5' tall and chopped to 1'. It come from a garden nursery (e-shop, couldn't find better offer and a seller closer to me, it was hot stuff!)... I was in hurry...and could have more plants if divided after air-layering. Now I look at the tree again and see I could have chopped it much lower... The issue is that the tree was grown very fast in the nursery and internodes are too long... I might correct my first mistake and air-layer it now. So it's best to buy this stuff in person.
