I collected this American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) early this past summer, with essentially the entire rootball intact. It has grown extremely vigorously since, sending out a nearly 6 foot long branch above the trunk chop, which has been healing very well.

The problem is, I am struggling to imagine where this tree could go. The transition from the trunk to the new apex is not too convincing. My plan has been to chop the largest branch (branch 1) above what I am growing out as the new apex (branch 2). My gut instinct tells me to also chop branch 3?

The main problem is trying to figure out a long term vision for the tree.

I will of course not be doing any work on it until late January.

You could leave #3 to help close the original chop and the wound from chopping #1. It will also help bulk up that section a bit and help improve taper. If it was mine, I would leave #3 for another season.
