PP are relatively easy to propagate with a little knowledge Recognize the growth characteristic that they can be propagated by root cuttings. They strike form semi-hardwood cuttings and soft-wood cuttings but a mist system is almost required with soft-wood cuttings. Easiest with least effort is root cuttings and after that when current growth has hardened or stopped extending. At "home" a plastic tote can be used as a mini-greenhouse. Disposable drinking cups can be used with holes punched in the bottom. Match size or larger shoots of this years growth. A "good" hormone with a good propagating soil. Strip bottom leaves and leave 2-4 leaves, hormone app and stick. Place in tote or whatever you use and open morning and evening to mist including inside and lid of tote. Keep in shade. Have fun. PP are a fun plant to play with.
No but I have heard they did not root easily... Root cuttings is the supposed way to go AFAIK.Did anyone ever try an air-layering of a Persimmon tree?
This is the first time I hear this. Thank you for the information!@garywood gave you the most complete advice available.
Root cuttings, only take them when repotting. Best time to repot persimmons is late summer and autumn. Spring repotting tends to have rot problems, not always but often enough. So autumn is best. Take roots for root cuttings while repotting.
Wondering if any were successful?Good question... because I am about to try a number of air-layers and have never done them on this species.
So much water under the bridge since I wrote that earlier message. Short answer - I never tried. I still have the adult stock, but I had to move across the country, which required me to shorten/reduce many of my larger trees. Sadly, I had to throw out some pretty big branches from many trees that I was hoping to propagate.Wondering if any were successful?
