Peat moss and sand

Straight peat moss is very fine grained, in addition to being organic. This will be a very heavy mix with poor drainage. I emphasize what I said previously about damp conditions in the pot. Consider chopped sphagnum as a substitute.

We tried the sand/peat with a decorative Maple last year and the Wife agrees with me that we need to get it out of the sand/peat mix this Spring as it has compacted like stone. The plant is ok - we just were never certain about watering. Several times last season I pushed spikes into the soil and removed them around the base to make sure it was getting water where it needed it.
