OUTDOOR PROPOGATION USING DIFFERENT HYDROPONIC GROWING MEDIA

MADE MY SEEDLING SELECTIONS WITH THE SIBERIAN ELMS……..ROOTING NICELY TOO.

I was suprised to see actual root nubs on the Siberian Elms. They are getting a grow formula nutrient….quite low really only around .9-1.0 ec.

I do add potassium sulphate so the ratio is a bit higher on this end of the npk. This increases brix, especially with lower overal npk.
I could of fed these very high with the leaders rockiting away, but I chose the slower approach so the rooting would benefit.Natural processes will initiate such as phospherous absorption and natural rooting stimulants that will only be achieved through slower growth and less assimilation of nitrogen and more natural carbohydrate or suger/brix production in the leaves.

I went ahead and made my selections from over 200 seedlings in their 2 nd season ,keeping 65 that showed superior traits over the rest of them.
Traites such as more thicker and vigorous stems with a nicer and healthy color along with no signs of black spot on the leaves…the ones that seemed to have a more natural resistance to black spot as I do not use fungicides at all…( except natural yucca ).

These have more light now growing 6 to a tray and I am excited for the rest of the season…….These will thicken in there resting state with some additional growth, but nice things do happen with rooting when they rest and photosynthesize…….the trunks are almost popping with roots from little root nubs on many of them…..this is a sign of natural prrocesses producing growth stimulants and rooting stimulants in the plant and its roots making a overall healthier tree ……better vascular systems ,roots and all!!!
Just look at the nubs forming in the first picture!!!

Keep in mind these are only about 5 or so mnths old beings I only started them August of last season……. later in the season.

Have you tried growing Japanese maples or hornbeams with your method? I can’t wait till those elms hit your eBay store!

I am doing a Winter crop of Hornbeam indoors……..maples are doable ,but you need to devote a whole tent as they require quite low light at first……….I am also collecting local trident seeds this autumn for a winter crop.

Awesome. I can get you some local trident seeds as well if you would like more diversity.

I'll be looking forward to the tridents. A CO2 grown ground layered trident seedling should have an awesome root flare foundation for a shohin size monster.

I will probably skip ground layering as the little stonewool cubes do a fine job since they do not root till like half way down into a 1.5” cube.
Though I can use a propogation fertilizer so people can do this quite easily.

The seeds are local in my area and the trident maple tree is very fine and old about two blocks away from me.I will knock on their door in September.

TAXUS X MEDIA PROPOGATION

I was going to ask the neighbor if I could take cuttings from his English yew,but instead I decided to go to the local nursery to see if I could find a Taxus Cuspidata……found out they had Taxus X Media ‘hicksii’.
Seems a nice cultivar…great green color and an upright grower.
I will prepare a bit with some foliar feeds and root drenches and then proceed to get some growing!!!

JBP ARE GREAT!
THE 2nd crop will be nice.

The seedling cuttings are fascinating and great looking.
The 2nd wave brought outside a little later are catching up with very nice clump forms.

My keeper un-cut seedlings are very fun.The 50/50 perlite & growcubes media is the charm.

I DECIDED TO HOLD ONTO A COUPLE OF THE SEEDLING CUTTINGS.

These look interesting.I up-potted into 3” Grodan Stonewool blocks.

Nice conical shape on the first one.And the second one is quite nice with low branching.

POTTED UP MY FAVORITE KEEPER PROJECTS.

I used grade #3 perlite and shredded Grow Grow wool…(Groadan Stonewool).

Planted into larger Rootpouch fabric pots ,so as to keep media particulates out of my resevoir and my pumps free of debre.

Quite an airy mix,but also retentive with the addition of the Stonewool….about a 50/50 mix.

I will probably appreciate this as they get full of roots.

A couple 2nd season JBP seedlings and a Siberian Elm air-layer.

The Pines are terrific size in only their 2nd season!!!

I will have a crop of these regular non-cutting seedling JBP by Autumn for sale……they are great because they spend their first 3 mnths or so in an indoor co2 fertilized environment.Nice budding too.

Hi Cmeg1,

Most of the bonsai soil mix is Akadama, pumice and lava rocks? Do you recommend to replace Akadama, pumice and lava rocks with grade #3 perlite and shredded Grow Grow wool when repot? Pines seem to grow very well in your mix. Thank you!

For hydroponics, specifically ebb and flow systems, this media is fantastic. When I do finally pot some trees up I will stick with it for the affordable cost.

Perlite is best at a local hydro store…… There should be one within an hour from anyone it seems and you save big time on shipping and the gro wool I’ve got from a Hydro store also

JBP SEEDLING KEEPERS!!!

Potted up another rather interesting one just today…..branches all over it…… Hopefully many leaders shooting everywhere next season and very quick trunk thickening!!!

get me a collection going.8F136015-CD03-4563-844B-757017DBC222.jpeg824B8FAF-E930-41CC-A838-A979157A1DD4.jpeg2344416B-BD40-497E-8F0D-D1C8A782D49F.jpeg516A8E54-F183-4C4B-85FD-FE0EC201BD1E.jpeg2B4D736B-3803-4B66-B4BD-3B120283C75A.jpeg7E1DE413-3AA6-4C28-8D3D-734D04938B6D.jpeg

Outdoor hydro livening up!!!!

These Siberian Elm will be nice……I have an entire case of 3x3x2.5” Stonewool blocks to up-pot them.Lots of low branches will make nice sacrifice growth.

Happy with the growth and color of the JBP seedlings…….these were mainly outdoor grown all the time and in 2nd season…..nice color and healthy appearance in the Stonewool blocks.
I love the smaller double and triple trunks I managed to save…..some have fantastic genetics of needles right down to the base of the candles!!!

Very nice, I also use the same blocks for my JBP

They do a great job.The Siberian Elms have a very reliable Autumn color to the leaves.I abandoned the project for too much work, but now that my outdoor fascility is getting delivered by Autumn a new batch is in order.Every lasy one of over 400 of them had a nice Fall color!
The true reason I will grow these again.
The outdoor crop needs netting or the japanese beetles will absolutely devour these……more than any other plant I’ve owned.

The indoor crop will be very fun and the seeds will germinate from just a couple drops of water!!!

And also the little 1.5” or 2” mini block make a very nice swollen base with much air pruning out of the bottom of the block. The seed germinated about halfway down into the block and prunes roots very dense and short and will also flare the base out a bit…….almost no need for ground layering as I used to do wuite frequently with little seedlings…….I’l see if I can find a picture.

THE BENEFITS OF THE STONEWOOL BLOCKS…….(air/pruning and natural flare).

@Bonsai Pete
so here is the natural air-pruning of the taproot that a 1.5 inch mini block can do to a seedling germinated in the block…… it’s quite phenomenal ,I couldn’t believe the growth rate and how compact and tiny the root system was being naturally air-pruned off and the swelling that results was very phenomenal!!!
These were grown outdoors and sewn late in the season around August!!! Then after a short dormancy were brought indoors for extended season growth.
So what seems to happen is the seed germinates halfway down into the block because the holes are pre-punched quite deeply so there’s Airpruning instantly on just a 1/2 inch root from a germinating seed!!!!
These are great!
I literally don’t have much desire to make seedling airlayers anymore except perhaps Zelkova Broom or something.

Siberian Elm may be a sort of invasive species I’m not quite sure but the growth rate, the slightly larger leaves and the color are just superb.
I can’t wait to start the indoor crop all winter long in the new outdoor fascility. And coupled with the CO2 and all the Dutch methods ….they should be some very huge trunks comes spring for sale.

******check the third picture after removing the top half of the stonewool block******
