I have heard of coir leaching calcium and needing enhanced specialized ‘for coir’ fertilizers.

This is correct. Double buffering with Cal Mag is an easy solution though (I have never used 'for coir' specific nutrients, but I am sure they are out there)

One more question, if you don't mind. Do you do anything special when transferring the trees from the stone wool to a bonsai mix? I'd imagine it would be quite a shock to the trees going from hydro to soil.

BURNING BUSH AIR-LAYERS


Earlier in the season befor leaves grew in the way I slipped some stonewool mini-blocks over the stems of this 100 year old bush in my yard.

I was going to propogate all of them this year, but got lazy, but it turns out leaving them on there is good. The stonewool will probably stay there for quite a few years before degrating to which it is known for so next year, they will be bigger yet, and everything will be in place to make some ringbark’s..or even a few years down the road.

I did do a couple that look very nice and even some really mega thick wants to see what happens here are pictures.

Some were fresh and new adventious shoots that will root less than two weeks probably……then a 1” trunk and a 1/2” and then a couple littlw ones with great shape……. The little ones will route within a couple weeks to two bigger ones maybe longer but maybe not as long as I think maybe these route very quickly the big thick ones after there’s a lot of roots I just chop to branch back and hopefully get some late season Buds to make a survive over the winter.

THE SIBERIAN ELM IS FILLING IN NICELY.

I am cuttting back the fertilizer a bit.Let it slow down if I can,but lots of bio-stimulants!

I am considering working on an organic approach next season…..I want to test ingrediant ph and everything….and also mix in regular salts also…..like calmag…..some potassium and such…..and also to correct deficiencies that arise suddenly.

And slow this down a bit as its getting very dense…….not bad for an under two year old tree!!

I’m gonna have to start a few flats of these for the extended season starting August through Winter and then outside in Spring.
Get some ground layered trunks going.
They sure are naturals for this treatment

So the Siberian Elm is getting very interesting.

I am also happpy to recieve a rather large Pauls Scarlet Crataegus x media from Brent today.
This Hawthorn can grow very fast…..like 7’ leaders in a season!!!!

So this gre very fast and I gave it another trim…..made some night shots.Getting quite twiggy.
The Siberian Elm backbuds very nicely…as long as it rests a bit before trimming..I get buds all the way to the trunk…….
I’M GROWING ABOUT 70 OF THESE INDOORS TO GET SOME NICE AIR-LAYERED TRUNKS OVER WINTER!!!
Should be about an Inch or so round

I'm sure youve addressed this before, but is that elm in 100% stone/rock wool? Whenever I hear someone talk about the search for the "next akadama" my mind goes to this thread have you tried growing surface moss on it?

It is grade#3 perlite with fine layers of stonewool laced throughout……Then a thin layer on top
I also employ self-pruning fabric liner.

I really am into the fabric…. certain in provides more compact growth…….we’ll see the roots in around february as I usually strat it indoors.

Had a very unproductive season with the AC issue being ineffective…….ITS A TOTAL WINTER GROW SINCE NO AC IS NEEDED THEN.

I so aplologize…….looks a Spring event

I planted these a mnth ago and they will be layered next season early…..perhaps in the grow fascility very early…….big trunks for sure.

Most likely layered…..not all of them….they get unusually fat trunk bases in the stonewool…..can see the self pruned tap right from the start.I will layer many though.

PLACED THE SIBERIAN ELMS EVENLY IN THE SUNSHINE.

These are growing quiick……placed them together and evenly.
These will be awesome sometime next season…..I will start a flat early indoors for maximum effect late winter.

These grow nicely……Here is my 2 year old also.

seed is good too in a little 1.5” stonewool cube that air- prunes the taproot.

I am cuttings all the way with pines though.

My favorite species are seeds that do not require stratification treatments.

The siberian elm seed will store for 15 years frozen and sprout in one day with a drop of water!!!
