NC Bonsai expo in Asheville, NC

A few other trees.

1. My club's display (Blue Ridge Bonsai Society) won best overall display, and my round stand and trees won best mini display (if you don't mind if we/I pat ourselves on the back for a moment). Our theme this year was small trees -- and for once they were not overlooked in a show of mostly giant trees.

Jim..your club's display was excellent!! Unfortunately it did not win best overall display! It was Arthur's choice...so it won the Curator's Award! Still very deserving of a PAT on the back though!!

Here is the display that Rodney picked as Best in Show:)

Sorry Jim. I wanted to post a picture of your shohin display, and John and Ken's display, but my phone ate the pictures. Yours, along with the rest of your group, was quite well done.

...and anyone who has been to the show know that John and Ken set the standard for beautiful trees and thought provoking displays...every year.

Oops! My mistake and I've made the correction.

What John didn't mention was that his bald cypress in the center of the Best in Show display won the hearts of those who visited the show (and we had a BIG crowd) and awarded it the Visitor's Choice Award (I think that was the name).

Thanks Dave!

Ps... I see part of your red pine in one of the pictures above. And I saw a nice picture of it over at BSG... Do you have any pictures to share of it? ;)

Jkl, your Crepe Myrtle is looking great in fall color. :)

It was a great time. picked up a pot or two and spent a good sunday afternoon ribbing Martin Sweeney at the auction. It was a great time and Dale had great pots.

Jason,

I enjoyed hanging out with you too. I just wish one of us had enough cash on hand to win one of the auction items. I almost purchased that Dale pot you purchased Sunday. Picked it up three times. It was a cool pot and the price was ridiculously low. If it was an oval, you wouldn't have had a chance! Can't wait to see what you put in it.

Hopefully there will be an auction at the Winter Silhouette Show in December...

Regards,
Martin

I missed the auction, but I was able to meet up with Martin. as well. He hooked me up with a few very nice 4-5 year old Arakawa maple cuttings. If you're looking for Arakawa, he's your man...thanks Martin, great to finally meet you....and how about those Red Sox!!!
I also go a very nice pot from Dale...Jason, were you the one really digging that large glazed oval of Dale's, only to have some guy with a Boston accent snatch it out from underneath you??? Sorry...but it did go to a good home:).

Dave,

I really enjoyed meeting you as well. Your Red Pine and your San Jose were well prepared and showed very well.

I put my lucky 2004 World Series T-shirt away for the rest of the season as the last 2 times I wore it the Sox lost! Sunday's game was a Godsend. Of course, I was already asleep, but was very happy to hear about it this morning. Unfortunately, it doesn't get any easier as Verlander awaits.

Thank you for the compliments on the Arakawas. I am very interested to see what you do with them over the next few years.

Regards,
Martin

All,

These were three of my favorite trees from the Expo.

The Arakawa was from the Susquehanna Club's display. It was showing cork bark all the way to the secondary branching and nice fall color. It was one of the few that was.

The forest is an elm forest (Cedar, I've been told) by Ken Duncan. It is outstanding. I remember Ken putting it together at a Bonsai Society of the Carolinas meeting and redesigning it a few years later at either another Bonsai Society of the Carolinas meeting or a Bonsai Learning Center workshop. Either way, it is aging far better than I am.

The last tree is a lovely shimpaku displayed by the Blue Ridge Bonsai Society. I really liked it too.

Regards,
Martin

Congrats to the SC boys for best display!! I had a great time going to this event. Great to see ya'll there, and I am going to take you up on the offer to come visit your farm John!

John,
Do you have any closer pics of your show ready bald cypress? I have one that I'm trying to copy your tree after.

Here you go Jeremy...but the pic really doesn't show near as much detail as the videos(this is the tree that I have chronicled the development over the last 5 years on Youtube).

This is such a nice and natural tree, well done John.

Thanks for the pics Dave. How bout them patriots?

Does dale still have pots left? I'd like to get one since he won't be making them anymore.

I'm still making pots and have no intentions to stop :)

I guess you'll have to wait a while longer to get one!

BTW, The Douglas Fir and Rodney Clemons' demo trees were both in my pots.

Awesome tree John. Congrats on the accolades. Speaking of Youtube videos...

Yeah, I thought so. I really did feel badly that you weren't able to pull the trigger on the purchase( but I'm happy I was:p)...but Dale said he'd be back again next year;).

oh I was able too but I was gonna take a stab at negotiating first. You were willing to pay more than me and I wasn't gonna stand in the way.

I attended this expo last year and was very impressed. JohnGs group was the most impressive that I have seen and looks like it was just as impressive this year.

Many of the club displays that I saw were some of the best I have ever seen anywhere and it looks like they were great again this year.

I was disapointed that I could not make it this year, hopefully I will next year. I did send two trees to be used in my club's display and am told that they were the only tropicals at the show. My Burt Davy Ficus returned looking very different than when I sent it, dropped a lot of leaves. I can only conjecture that it got cold toes up there in the mountians.

Thanks to you folks that included the pictures on this thread, at least I got a glimpse.

I am also sorry that I missed out on the "Dale" pots and hope you do come back next year Dale.
