I am really enjoying this thread! I put some moss on the surface of mine and set them in a tray with substrate. It makes a huge difference!

I have done the tray method since last summer and am having good success with it. Need to tidy it up however as the roots from the tropicals are growing wild in that tray.

Here’s a little crab root cutting that got a new pot today. Needs some soil dressing.

Just to be clear, you took a root cutting from a crab apple tree and were able to sprout new buds/branches?

I know you can do this with some species, like Ficus, but hadn't seen it with crab apple before.

I posted this a couple of weeks ago elsewhere. It seems to still be alive now which is good as I haven't tried anything like that before. It's a little Melaleuca seedling that only ever grew this much over 2+ years.

If it stays healthy and pushes some growth I'll give it a trim.

That is all natural movement due to it's location in the yard. I tend to get good movement with seedlings by giving them plenty of shade so they go searching for the sun. I have moved it now so hopefully it can continue in a similar fashion.

So I just realized I already had a bonsai. My old ginseng ficus. I am brand new to bonsai. As in this month!! Made some mistakes already. I defoliated the inner leaves of Of the ginseng then reported her. Has nice backbudding starting on the one branch all the way to the base already though. I’m now waiting to prune it further and slowly introducing it to the great outdoors!!

Purchased my very first pre-bonsai nursery stock tree. A Hokkaido Chinese elm tree. I repotted into Hoffman bonsai soil and placed it in a slightly larger pot and I’m keeping it in shade and slowly letting sun get to it. Letting it grow this year and develop a trunk. I have no interest in the S curves at all. I realize it will be a long while before I can do anything with it.
Or will it? Opinions on when to prune and wire are welcome!!

Secondly I have an old tree grown for foliage. I now believe it is a way overgrown ficus Benjamina??
It is over 4’ tall and the leaves are up to 6” in length. Ridiculous... I now realize. But it was just a house tree. Now I need strong suggestions for pruning this!

Right now it looks to have a bunch of tiny trunks, I don't know it they will fuse. Also, wiring is pretty much impossible on a tree that tiny. Pruning will also be difficult. You might want it to be a bigger tree in the future.

As for the ficus, I'm not sure. Looks like a benjamina, but it's hard to say.

Thanks for your input. I thought they were individual trunks too is there a way to encourage them to fuse while they are still so young? Can I prune all but one or two trunks and have the existing roots put energy into developing the others or wait and split them up and develop them together for a multi trunk?

Try tying them (gently) together, once the trunks thicken they may become fused, but I don't know if it works with elms.
