I lived in Hawai'i nearly 30 years, but...in an upland rain forest at 4Kft. So sure, I grew trident and Japanese maples. I shipped some of my best bonsai but this was in the early nineties and things were less stringent. They all eventually died from fungus infection. Back then it rained most every day. Things improved when I erected a rain shelter, open ended greenhouse, and had more control. If you'll be in East Hawai'i join a club.
I dearly miss the island and hope to return.
