There will be a private collection reduction sale of a large collection of world class bonsai on July 7th and 8th 2018 in Los Angeles California. Well over one hundred bonsai will be offered for sale. Follow this page for all the information you’ll need to take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire some excellent specimen bonsai. Many large one of a kind trees will be available. [EDIT] This will be a cash-only sale. Shipping is available, but most of the arrangements will have to be managed by the buyer [/EDIT] All bonsai will be sold and must be removed on the weekend of sale only. This is going to be a single event - all trees will be sold at the posted prices. Most of these trees are quite large and will require a van or small truck. Arrangements for removal from sale site and to a local nursery for later pick up will be possible for a fee. Shipping may be an option if buyer makes all arrangements for pickup and delivery. Trees can be crated at cost ($25 per man/hour plus materials) and buyer will make all arrangements and payments for shipping. Please note many of the trees will require at least two people to crate due to size.

I wish I could get some prices sooner. I’d make a trip if it makes sense. Not a Facebook guy so posting on this forum would be great also.
Thanks

Sorry but I doubt if I can post the trees and prices here - there are 150+ trees. They are all listed on FB now Prices will go up Monday. Some will be high most will be extremely reasonable for the quality of tree. It would be worth asking someone on FB to show you the page.

All trees are now listed on Facebook. Prices should be up Monday. If you're not on FB I'd suggest asking someone who is to show you the page. This is truly a one time opportunity to acquire some world class bonsai.

Prices will go up Monday

I think you mean "prices will be posted on Monday". When I first read this I thought I had to move fast :)

Do you have a more specific location? LA is a big place. Could be anywhere from Long Beach (close) to Calabasas (one hour further away).

Who is reducing their collection if I am allowed to inquire?

In my opinion, and considering how they're being sold, the owner will certainly not get all they are worth in the market today, and it certainly leaves out a majority of collectors. That doesn't make sense to me at all.

Lots of interesting trees and pricing on the Facebook page. I can understand why the seller is taking the approach they're taking. Shipping to online buyers is a huge problem for trees of this size and stature.

I know people online bitch about sellers that won't ship stuff, but sometimes that's just the way it is.

A death or illness that forces sales such as this (and I have no idea if that's the case here, but it certainly feels that way to me having just gone through similar processes with an estate), make trying to get the perfect sale a little silly.

The sheer number of trees shows that quite a bit of time is going into simply keeping them watered. Making crates, setting up logistics, etc. take time and money and effort that is probably better spent elsewhere.

Selling off collections can be a painful, not always optimal, thing.

If this collection were mine, I would have kept it off the net.

Nothing but pain and aggravation comes from online sales. People will try to jack you on price off the bat-- renegotiate the price after they agree to the sale- try to wheel and deal with complicated "Ill buy THAT one for x IF you sell THAT one for y" kind of stuff. It sucks.

What alternative would you suggest?

Local sale through either a club, local bonsai biz. From the size and quality of some of the trees, I'd be very surprised if the person who owns them isn't familiar with both...

40K for the Chinese Elm? I don't like elm so am biased but come one it's a Chinese Elm. I see many trees that is much cheaper and looks much better.

Probably listed already at all the clubs. Personally, I think these trees are priced at the high end of the market - at least for LA. I was looking at a tree that was originally listed for $800 and thinking - hmmmm maybe. And then the price went up to $8K - which is way above what I would be willing to pay. But if the trees sell... it means they were priced appropriately.

I'd have to agree those are high altitude nosebleed prices.

I would not consider those prices without first understanding whose' trees they have been over the last X number of years.

Don't let the pictures fool you That tree is worth every bit of that. If it doesn't sell it's new home will be the NationalBonsai collection.

Tell me what happens if these trees do not sell for the asking prices? Are they all going to go to The National Bonsai Collection? I don't understand all the secrecy, last minute pricing, no viewing period etc. Makes me wonder what is going on. For the kind of money being asked the sale should have been handled much more professionally by people that know what they're doing in my opinion.

You don't just make the decision to put the tree in the National collection it has to be nominated and selected.

Whatever the process I'm sure it will be accepted. This tree has been worked on for over 50 years by a Chinese master of his art. I can't imagine any public collection not wanting it.
