Liquid Fertilizer

"Please do not overcomplicate fertilizing of bonsai. It is not an arcane dark art."

Couldn't have said it better...

I disagree,it is an artform full of mystery and intrique.

For me the secret lies in what is unseen,or rarely seen, the symbiotic dweller underground.

Mycrozia? I believe I've read it does not like chemical fert.?

It's phosphorous it doesn't like. If you're trying to promote it in your pots (really unnecessary) you need a low P fertilizer.

... As an educator, I can't resist a bit of correction on what Treebeard wrote. Although most salts do consist of a metal ion, and a non-metal ion, a better definition is that a salt is the ionic product of the reaction of a base with an acid. For example, sodium hydroxide, Na(+)OH(-) and hydrochoric acid, H(+)Cl(-) react to give water, H20 and sodium chloride, Na(+)Cl(-). The base, and therefore the resulting salt, need not contain a metal. ... I know this is eye-glazing stuff: I apologize, I just couldn't help myself!
Oliver

Thanks for the clarification, Oliver. After I left my post, other bits of high-school chemistry starting drifting up into the light, and I realized I had probably oversimplified.

CamdenJim, as a general rule all plants need the same trace elements. It's the proportions that are going to vary from species to species, and with time of year. Orchid fertilizer should be better for your tree than nothing at all, I believe, unless it contains something highly unusual.

Different fertilizers contain different proportions of trace elements. No offense, JKL, but that's why it's a good idea to use at least two in alternation. (Not necessarily daily alternation; monthly alternation should be good enough, or bi-weekly.)

Mycorrhizae -- there's a topic for another full thread's-worth of discussion. Not right now for me, tho; gotta make sure things are going smoothly as my kid gets ready for church. Have a good day, people!

Yeah . . . most of them don't have enough. But they all have the same ones.

WOW
I would not have thought this would have sparked such a discussion.

Thank you for all your thoughts. I have a RO system also with a softner that uses salt. So I will take that into consideration

Since joining Bonsainut, among your threads, you've started a discussion on soil, and now fertilizer. These two topics never fail to generate conversation. Now, to complete the trifecta, you must start a thread questioning the best source of bonsai material, making sure to mention box stores, yamadori, and specialty bonsai nurseries. Be sure to mention that you don't want to spend alot...it'll be fun:D.

And make sure that you gush about how much you LOVE ginseng ficus, just can't get enough of them!!!!:D:D:D

Are your outside faucets connected to the softener? Usually they are not.

No, no it should be the amazing growth and health a potted tree gets from Superthrive.

Monza you may be right on that one, S T threads have been contentious. My opinion is skip it.

i think you should rely on your skills to keep a bonsai alive not some "miracle" potion......a.k.a. superthrive....never used it. anyways this thread has been a great source of information on ferts. I have recently switched to almost purely inorganic soil and i have realized how much i need to fertalize more....like 80% more! my trees better get ready to grow! thanks everyone for all the great info!

Not sure how to take your response. I have posted several items that I needed help with. Many people have not been very helpfull and out right rude. A very few people have sent me information that helped. I really do not understand why this is a issue. If I have asked poeple the same question others have and you do not like it then dont answer me. I have used the search feature and did not find a answer to my question. Again to all that have been negative I have been trying to learn and we are not all masters maybe you should sit back and remember when you started.

Wow, I certainly didn't see this coming. When I read your post, "WOW, I would not have thought this would have sparked such a discussion.", I had to smile because certain topics always draw lots of attention...this is one of them. Go re-read your thread on soil components- 44 posts, over 1600 views and plenty of discussion for and against certain additives...that is another topic guaranteed to get spark lots of debate and get some folks excited. My comment was really for those that have been around long enough to have experienced the flame wars that have broken out in the past when these topics were debated years ago, and was said tongue in cheek. I'm sorry that you misinterpreted my post as personal attack on your posting(I apologize to anyone who didn't "get it"), and also that you feel I'm one of the "rude" ones...when I participated in one of your earlier threads, I gave you good, friendly advice. Whether you appreciated it as such I don't know. This has been a good discussion and rehashing the ins and outs of soils, fertilizer, pre-bonsai sources, etc can be very enlightening when done thoughtfully and respectfully to those involved. Good luck with your trees.

He was joking, I replied with a joke as well. Sorry if you didn't see the humour, the internet has that way...

Remist . . . I just read through all of the messages in this thread. While some of them were quite odd and many showed how poorly we in America have learned our sciences, I found NONE that were "quite rude." I think we all were trying to help.

Dav4's post came very late in the discussion, after were were staring to repeat ourselves, and was, I think, a way to bring the discussion to an end with a bit of lightness.

==================

To whoever it was who commented on the need to fertilize more often because he was using an inorganic mix, that will be a bit LESS necessary if you use an organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizers will Adsorb (note the "D") to the inorganic particles and will then stick around for a bit longer. (Conversely, folks whose mix is heavily organic, will profit from an Inorganic fertilizer.)

Another hint toward better bonsai through chemistry.

Users of an organic fertilizer should always remember, however, that they need to add trace elements.

I also found the comment to be witty, and poked my own joke back. Sorry to anyone that was offended by the ginseng ficus comment... No one was being rude on purpose, I'm pretty sure you'd know when they are.

You are correct Judy, usually with a sledge Hammer, Dave is one of the good guys, I'm sure he had the best intentions.

Its not just this thread. I have posted several and all of them have some wise comment. It is very frustrating for someone starting out asking questions and getting either no response or something like put it in the ground. I understand it may be garbage but why is it.

this thread was just the last one read and I was very frustrated. I really was hoping people would be a little more scerious when someone new asked questions.

So thank you to everyone that offered comments and I will take them into account when I come up with my own plan.

Have a great day
