Korean Hornbeam

Pretty ;) Has anyone had success with grafting seedlings across large wounds like that? I have very similar ones on a Japanese maple that I was thinking about experimenting with.

not exactly the answer you were looking for I presume but in general I don't bother with trying to cover a wound like that up..... instead I tend to prefer to carve it and create a hollow.... its a natural effect that is easy to create and helps enhance the feeling of age...

I watched Kathy do it across a pretty big cut on a trident; not seedlings, but inarch grafts. I'll try to load up some photos or find where I may have already posted here somewhere.

Repotted into the old Yozan pot...the base was a little deep, so it is sitting up a bit higher than I like, but the composition isn't bad.

Jesus...look at the ramification! Very beautiful tree, and yes, great composition. I agree it's up a bit high, though. Are you going to adjust this next time you repot, or are you okay with how it is now?

Thanks. I don't like it up that high, but I don't think I'll get it much lower, and the soil slope is at least not offensive because it continues the trunk flare, and the age of the pot compliments the trunk. This pot is less than 2" deep, and if it doesn't do well, next year I'll move it back to the deeper blue Kataoka Yoshimura pot. I am eager to see the tree in leaf with this pot.

looks great Brian..... really love these in white pots.... excellent composition.... do you intend to fill out the front section of that lowest left hand branch?? I look forward to seeing it leafed out :)

Hopefully...more than anything I'm trying to decide if I want to let the whole thing grow taller, or really keep it squat and chase it back.

the height is good ... I wouldn't let it get any taller.... personally I prefer the less pointy look of a wide rounded crown....

looking great of course!!!

Fantastic K. Hornbeam Brian, and I agree. The ramification is really good. (You're right, Bonsai West does have some really nice K Hornbeams available!)

They do, and it's interesting to watch them climb in price. This one was listed shortly after I bought mine, and it has about doubled in price since '08. Wish some of my investments would have done that well over the same 4 years! It's a beautiful tree.

I saw that one Brian! And loved it. Didn't love the price ;) Unbel. that it could have gained so much in value since '08. My investments in '08 was just 'recovering' from the tech bust, so now I just don't look anymore till I have too lol But that tree is quite impressive either way. I wish I had one that looked half it's age :)

Quick shot with a full head of lettuce...

wow it looks great and, to my newbie eyes, a lot better than the first pics of the post

Looking very happy, doesn't look like it misses the deeper pot so far.
Such a stately old gentleman.
