So, I was out this morning in the backyard with our new puppy trying to tire him out a bit...it didn't work, so he will be helping me do some yard work later today:). Anyway, he went tearing underneath one of my benches and this came flying out with him. It's a shimpaku cutting I started 10 months ago. It hadn't obviously rooted by October and had been placed with the other unrooted cuttings underneath the bench to over winter. Well, it's clearly rooted now. It's at least a cm thick at the soil and already has decent taper and a shari. I'm not really into mame but this one looks like it wants to be one, so...it may get wired shortly:cool:.

That is too fun!

It is cool how easily shimpaku root from cutting, at almost every time of year. Interesting to see roots continue to grow in cool weather, and we've had some <27 degree nights around here.

I know and same here. These cuttings were on the bench until mid November, freezing solid several times before being placed on the ground...where they have been unprotected ever since with temps following to 23 f or lower several times. Most people don't realize that junipers are TOUGH and have a will to survive like no other...unless they live inside, are overwatered or otherwise excessively coddled.

This is a great lesson for me. I would have tossed it if I didnt see rooting within a month or two (I've never tried to root any Juniper cuttings). Are all species that persistent or just shimpaku?

I love it! That would look great beside a big strong well developed Juni on the bench.

Shimpaku seem to be very easy to root from cuttings, and I haven't tried rooting other cultivars or species. Junipers, in general, are just super tough, adaptable trees that laugh at heat and cold as a rule. Plant in the right soil, place in full sun and water regularly and they will grow and maybe thrive almost anywhere.

...and I hope to eventually use this as an accessory tree;)...thanks!

I guess you can call the juniper a "dogadori" now.

Well this is a "hunting" dog....maybe you should start taking him to the nursery to do the hunting?

I don't think the owners of the nursery would be quite so keen...I think Bob might try to style some of the trees he finds:p....no more wintering trees under the benches:(.
