Japanese maple forest in autumn color

Wanted to share this pot I just bought on EBay from a seller in Japan. As I said earlier in this thread, I was in search for a better pot for this forest. I wasn't entirely happy with the current one mainly because I think it is too deep. I believe this container will compliment the whole composition much better. Love the patina and its quite, aged elegance. I was envisioning a sky blue or cream glazed container, but this green will do very nicely just as well :) The photos below are from the seller.

What do you guys think?

That's a pot from Yorozu, isn't it? :D

Also, I like that pot a LOT more than what you currently have them in. I'm a sucker for shallow pots.

Good score...it caught my eye too. The glaze is nice, aging well, and it should work well for your forest. I have bought several from Yorozu-en and have had great experiences, in fact just bought two more today!

My New Years resolution was not to buy any new pots this year. So far I haven't...they've all been used!!! Finally, one resolution I could keep!

Haha! I guess we're shopping at the same places! :D Thanks Brian, I'm glad to hear you had a good experience from them since I'm a first time buyer. I am now just waiting for a reply on their shipping costs so that I can finalize the purchase.

I've been on the look out for good pots for a few of my better pieces. Sadly some still sit in cheap chinese pots  FYI I'm not as good with my resolutions!! :(

That is a beautiful pot! Great color, patina and shape! Makes me realize all the crap pots I have are just that, crap! ;) I guess this is the next big 'expenditure' I'll have to consider. Congrats Mach5 for the new pot!

I did a search for Yorozu-en at ebay, no results. Do you guys have the sellers ebay webpage?

Ebay store: http://stores.ebay.com/yorozuenannex
though I've only bought two through him on eBay, usually we work via email, and I try to get a couple at a time to make the shipping rate worthwhile. The light blue one my hawthorn is presently in came from them. It's hard to beat the patina of a used pot, and if you can get several at a time, the total cost becomes lower than most of what you can find in the states.

Thank Brian! Good idea on saving shipping costs. He does have some really nice looking pots! And I love that light blue pot you have on that hawthorn, it makes a big impact on the final design.

Damn fine container. It's beautiful and will go very well with the maple group.

Hi,

Wanted to share a few pics of my Japanese maple forest. This piece has been with me since 1999. A few years ago it was planted in a very shallow tray-like pot. That proved to be a bad idea!!:( Eventually the forest began to decline in health. In the Spring of 2011, it was repotted in a deeper pot ( pictured below) in an effort to bring the trees back to health and in good growing conditions. Since doing so, they have grown considerably better and look much healthier now. Eventually I do plan to transplant the forest into a wider but slightly shallower container. Maybe even a rectangular one? Hopefully I'll find the right one. Thus far I have not found the right pot for it. And the search goes on!

Next Spring, I plan on doing some extensive wiring to reposition and create more movement in some of the trunks and branches. Thanks for looking!! :)

Very nice! This may be a dumb question but was each tree planted seperatly or do maples spread? Like Aspens, I guess....

Thanks! No, not a dumb question at all. I started this forest with separate, single trees. As they grow and mature, the intricate web of roots ends up fusing together to form one single mass. When it comes time for repotting it all comes out in one piece. In nature maple does spread out naturally like most other species.

Update

This is an update of this forest. A couple of weeks ago it was repotted into its new pot. I think it fits it much better than the previous one yes? The root pad is all fused into one piece now and it was trimmed back as thin and flat as a pancake. Some of the surface roots are starting to show up nicely as well.

Also if you notice, I added a few smaller trees to the composition bringing the number of trees to a lucky 13! I think they add more depth and variety of size and scale. The perspective seems to be more pronounced now which is nice.

Below is a pic from last Fall.

And here is how the forest looks now.

I love the new pot, and the composition is looking great all around! I like the old pot too, but this one does compliment the composition better.

Maple leaves in spring are right up there with larch for me. I'm looking forward to it! :)

Great nebari on the main tree too!

I normally prefer the first pot but the new one is definitely much better (for me). I think it is a wonderful "upgrade". :)

Love the composition and the fall colors!!!

Thanks Dan! Yes I know what you mean. There is a moment as the leaves come out where they look like tiny, half opened umbrellas. They look absolutely exquisite!

Thanks again to all you guys for your comments. It is always nice to get reassurance from the pros!
