Japanese Beech: "choose your own adventure"

I'd go for the Kokufu look......I know....pipe dream.

Maybe in our lifetimes.

Here are my pipe dreams.
The first one as of yesterday. The second one as of last week and then as of yesterday.
While these are NOT naturalistic images of a maple they are idealized images which work well.

Brian, really nice work on this tree. It's coming along very well :)

Walter, I saw that you posted these pictures on your website the other day. I have to say that those are some of my favorite trees of yours. Really beautiful work.

Thanks, looking forward to updating with photos this winter. In the meantime, somebody should snap up this one...WOW!

So that tree is for sale Walter?? If only my countrymen (gov) weren't idiots about making it useless to import trees....

Quick shot after leaf removal...needs pruning and wiring, but the fall defoliation in 2010 really increased the number of buds.

brian if you dont mind me asking how wide is the trunk and how tall is this beautiful tree

It's 6.5" wide at the soil, 2.75" At 2" up, and is 24" tall. Still very much a work in progress...it was recently pruned again pretty hard to eliminate some of those heavy branches up in the crown. It looks a little sparse right now, but everything that's left is right. It will get to grow all year this year to beef it up again, then a fall defoliation should push buds back toward the trunk.

Thanks Dave, that was a lightbulb moment...the tree has been compacted, but now needs to grow taller...maybe in 7 years I can stick another photo up next to the 2005 and 2012 images and it will seem like its gotten somewhere...

Quick update about 15 months later. It was repotted in March, and I did more work on the mess of a base on the front:

1. removed the outer-most crossing root
2. clipped another fused root
3. positioned them outwardly
4. locked them in position with some sticks
5. covered with sphagnum moss.

Over time, I hope to reduce the fused root wrapped partly around the trunk.

The good news, is the roots on the back side are starting to look a little better:

And, here it is this evening, just getting ready to pop! This beech is always about the last thing to move, and it's been particularly slow this year. If you've had experience with beech, ramification is a challenge to develop, and it's finally starting to happen. If it can double the density and grow a graceful crown, it might become a decent tree one day.

Brian,

Beautiful tree. You're doing a great job with it and I appreciate the progressions and info that you provide to the community.

A Japanese Beech is in a class of its own.

Best,
