J. Chinesis 'old gold'

Nice filling in. Funny how green this "old gold" is. I have an old gold I reported into a terra cotta pot with bonsai soil last year and it's straight green now. I actually don't remember when the color started changing. I recently got another Chinese juniper that was called a Sea of Gold (I have to check the tag again) but I wonder if it's going to stay so gold.

The foliage seems to turn yellow/gold when left in direct sun. positioned it in dappled light...might have contributed to the greenery. I haven't had the tree for more than 2 years, so it could turn yellow with age...I donno. I'm not a fan of the yellow foliage anyways.

2/22/16; keeping the top thin so the lower branches stay stronger. Top to fill in through summer, then thin out again early winter.

I love to see people's efforts. I would love to see the tree with better lighting against an uncluttered background. People don't realize just how sophisticated the human eye is. In a digital camera we have these little built in computers to adjust light and focus but in the human eye with have the brain that will focus on something and filter out the clutter. When you take a picture like this one you get the clutter, the detail you see, when you compose the picture, is not clear in the Photograph you take. The photograph you take only responds to a focal point and the levels of light. It does not know detail from the planet Mars.

Thanks for the update - looking good on this end :)

I think you may be mistaken about it needing to be repotted, unless it is necessary to change the substrate. It will get stronger most quickly if you just leave it be in this pot. IMHO, this pot has enough volume to accommodate your juniper for 3 to 5 more years.

I agree!
Juniper tend to not really take off until their roots are good and established. That takes a couple years sometimes, so repotting again so soon might be a mistake of you are hoping for strong growth. They are not like Maples where they respond well to being reported every year while developing..

If I had used good soil, then I'd take your advise and leave it. But the drainage is really poor and when the surface gets dry it repels water. This Juniper will be planted on a rock, so fall will be a good opportunity to either plant it on the rock or put it in a deeper container to encourage longer roots.

Who are you reporting your maples to? I know that they like being repotted from time to time but reporting them to the authorities to get them to grow better is a new technique to me. :)

ever thought about grafting? I usally like to keep the original tree in-tacked but sometime it's fun to change skirts o_O

Looking healthy !
Going to wire the cascading branch some more outwards like after the first styling?

It's back to being a shrub again!
Looking healthy for sure! It'll be nice to see it this winter after you whip it back into shape.

12/15/17:
Foliage was burned during a late summer heat wave. But new mature growth is appearing so it's in good shape.
Many junipers in the landscape in my neighborhood got fried this year
