J. Chinesis 'old gold'

12/15/17:
Foliage was burned during a late summer heat wave. But new mature growth is appearing so it's in good shape.
Many junipers in the landscape in my neighborhood got fried this year

I have had trouble with juniper burn the last two years. Last year, I wasn't really sure if it was burn, disease, fungus, or whatever could turn the foliage brown so quickly but I suspected burn. I noticed it the day after the hottest day of the year. The same thing happened this year but not quite as bad.
Here is the reason I think it happened to me. I live close to the beach where it doesn't get much above 80 all summer. Then in October or November the Santa Ana Winds kick in and all of a sudden you get 105 degrees. The junipers that are inland are acclimatized by the hot summer and can handle it but costal junipers struggle. Even my California Junipers that are native to the desert got burned. The good news is they all lived. Next year I will keep a better eye on the late heat wave and put my Junipers in the shade.

Yes the last 2 years have been brutal on my garden; well above avg hi/low temps, with highs pushing 105. Back yard is concrete and I recorded temps of 138f in the canopy of pines and junipers on my bench. I set up umbrellas and moved many "full sun" trees to the shade for weeks. I lost several nice jbp, juniper and spruce before I realized what was happening.
Not normal for a beach town. I need to build a pergola and install sunshades before next June or I may lose more trees.

Definitely keep temps below 115F - above is fatal to most tree tissues.
Above 95F, the rate of metabolism exceeds the rate of photosynthesis --> no longer growing..
Roots need to be kept cooler yet which isn't as much of a problem as long as the substrate is damp - once dry, it is nearly impossible.

Well don’t leave us hanging! You got three years of updates to post sir.

My teacher finds this to be the best juniper commercially available. He has a 20 year old one that is practically indistinguishable from shimpaku. The old ones seem to only get gold in their growing tips, so as bonsai they tend to stay pretty green. I have a few that I don’t love, but this thread makes me want to hold onto em and give them another look.

Yes! it mounds and then elongates like shimpaku - the foliage is not as compact, but there is a resemblance for sure! strong sun exposure produces gold/yellow color. Semi shade and it tends to stay green, but doesn't grow as dense.

Great progression. Would love to see what it is looking like as of today!.

How corellatable is your juniper experience and threesome experience with hot babes after all these years? (I weigh very heavily towards juniper experience now. lol)

Negative correlation at this point. Funny to re-read these threads after 10 years
