Insane maple nebari

You rarely see this type of nebari in nature because most of the time they are underground. I fyou clear away the top soil most trees in your yard will display this quite nicely. I done some big Black Walnuts and a Sweet Gum like this to much delight! In big groves of maple you will find mass nebari if you clear away the top soil. Look along flood plains of rivers and you might see some.

I agree some "melting nebari" can overwhelm the tree's styling. But when it's done in proportion to the tree, it's fantastic.

I agree 100%. I think it (proper proportion) applies on everything actually. :)

I believe one aspect of bonsai art is to mimic trees in nature, and I have not seen any trees in nature that has this kind of nebari. An acquired taste, in my humble opinion

Regards

Exactly my thoughts. I do like fused nebaris but way WAY smaller.

I don't have much maple around me but see this type of nebari on lots of crape myrtle and live oaks here.

The moss in question is yama-goke which has the advantage of locking to itself and grows under Tsugi (Cryptomeria japonica) here and in Japan. But milled sphagnum is satisfactory. Another alternative to fert cakes is chicken pellets, or bone, blood and cottonseed meal in tea bags at the edge of the surface roots. Also, hollowing out the wood under the trunk and cutting all roots growing down is key.
For me, nebari is all important and I pretty much let the tree grow wild 'till the nebari is well on it's way.
