In Case You Missed the Announcement

Congrats grouper, didn't know you were writing a book :) You'll have to post a picture of you holding the first run :)

Just ordered the book. I pretty much ordered it just to get your autographs....Just kidding:)
Really looking foward to seeing some great trees & photography.
Congrats again you 3!

Thanks, Duane. I think you're going to love the book.

At the beginning of one chapter there's even a short quasi-fictional scene from the time I spent discussing Dan with David Fukumoto - just to bring it home to the Islands for you. :)

I have no doubt i'll love the book. Thanks for the teaser Will.

We had several of the advanced copies of the book on display at the convention, and diane Robinson was taking advanced orders.

The book was VERY positively received by the many people who stopped by to look through it. Some who had known Dan for decades, or who had been captured by his bonsai wisdom through the years, spent time eagerly reading through it. Others were simply captivated by the book's gorgeous look and feel, and by the photos that adorn every spread. It was a big hit. I'm proud how well it's turned out.

Elandan has Paypal set up now to facilitate orders from those who use it. They are surprised at the number of international orders pouring in.

The books are on a ship somewhere sailing to Tacoma, Washington, south of here. The arrival date is still uncertain, but my experience cruising around the Pacific sea lanes in the Navy years ago leads me to believe they may arrive within a week. Off-loading and then truck transport for curb-side delivery at Elandan is then all that will remain.

Vic and Eric were wrapped up in the actual running of the convention, but hopefully they will chime in here about the book's beauty and the enthusiasm it engendered among the people there.

I'll post again when I know more about it's arrival and availability.

Well, you better have enough for all of us.:(

Atilla, there WILL be one for you - I have already flagged your name on Elandan's list for special treatment. :)

There will be 1500 copies shipped to Elandan and Stane Lantern. That's the first printing. We can always do more when these are gone.

There are no words to describe how delighted I am to finally have the fruits of our labor in my hands. I'm crazy about it frankly... and would be even if I had nothing to do with it's creation. Mostly because there is a LOT of history inside of it's pages. Don't just go for the eye candy... the photos... read the stories... it'll help put a lot of our American bonsai experiance into perspective. Granted it is the part played by one player... but I would be equally excited to get behind the mind of a few other bonsai artists from/based in North America. Daniel is colorful and controversial... and while many can and do dislike him, there is much to be gleaned from his experiance and artistry.

By now you all know that this isn't a techniques book... this is a window into the life deliberately lived. Despite how people felt about him and his work - he never lost sight of what mattered to him... trees. Living on the West coast in the bonsai era that he has, did not endear him into the hearts of his compatriots... mostly because he bucked the precieved - emphasis on the word precieved - traditions adopted early in our bonsai history. However, it never swayed him for a moment from doing it the way he felt it ought to be done. Most people would have decided to conform... he never has. There is a grudging respect which is often given by even his hardest critics. Because he could have quit the sandbox - but instead he kept producing while others kept talking - or simply faded away.

In some ways I think the truth behind the man will help some people come to deeper places in their own art, because they will be inspired by his tenacity and vision. If he had desired to be the most famous bonsai artist of his time, there is no doubt in my heart that he would have achieved that. But instead he actually focused on the art more than his image - and has produced a massive body of work which will speak for him long after he is no longer with us. But the spark of his passion is captured inside of this book... and I hope it will give inspiration to the next generation of artists who want to be true to themselves and their vision above all else.

Daniel explained to me early in our friendship that... in bonsai there are pigeons and eagles, that some people would never get beyond a certain space in their artistry - which was fine... but that others were destined to be visionaries and soar. I was surprised at how deeply he felt it was his obligation to try and make sure that those people were equiped with the knowledge and material to help take bonsai even further than he has. He has a deep frustration over how he feels like people think they have to "pay their dues" in bonsai... that one's learning can and will be deeply accelerated if you work with great material and look beyond the boundaries of the mainstream.

That conviction is in the pages of this book... and obvious in the photos of the work he has done. I look foward to the kinds of discussions this book will spark. Because there is no way to experiance it and not have something to say. ;)

Here's latest from the fellow coordinating the printing:

The ship is due to arrive in port 9/30. Books may be delivered up to Elandan Gardens as early as 10/1, or early in the week of 10/4.

They will probably arrive at Stone Lantern the week 0f 10/11.
