Ilex's first official public display

I am just curious and wondering....because I don't know. Does a tree potted in a bonsai pot like this live in that particular pot year round? Or...just for show time....and it grows in a box other days of the year.

Nice combination of tree design, pot and color. Mighty fine!

This tree grows in that particular pot year-round. One of the judges made the comment that it really should have a smaller pot for display.

I think most people have a show or display pot for shows and another larger pot that it lives in normally. Show or exhibit pots are typically smaller.

On thinking about this, the thing I struggle with is this: most trees are repotted in spring. If it's a spring show, it's no big deal to repot into the show pot before the show. But if it's a fall show such as this, do people put the tree into the show pot in the spring or some tI'm closer to the show and us the latter risky with some trees?

Maybe @Adair M or @Brian Van Fleet can provide some enlightenment?

I plan show candidates year(s) in advance, and will ensure they land in their show pot the spring of. In some cases, they live in their show pots year-round. If I was in a climate that was hard on pots, I might swap the tree out of the show pot for winter. By that time, the root ball is solid enough that it’s not risky to shift it back to a similar-sized container.

I don’t make a big effort to shoehorn trees into small pots for shows, so usually what they’re shown in is suitable to grow in.

Thank you sir, for giving us the perspective of your experience doing this

Congrats on the award.
I think it is funny to have a different show pot and grow pot for trees. Sounds the same as having an expensive car for only special occasions.
Grow in it, show in it kind of guy. Not sure if I will change when older.
