How big is your Trunk

Whats your girth measured across the trunk?

I’ve read a lot of Smoke’s threads here, and I must admit I’ve got “trunk-envy” at times. But a lot of us have smaller trees and I think there’s also a big influx of newbies that are just starting out. I reckon the big thing to keep in mind is that we stick to the correct ratios of trunk vs actual height. All the veterans here have their trees for many years and achieved their 1/6 trunks. All of us starting out are still at 1/12, but we’ll get there, someday.

Its the same trunk, same tree.

I will get back to you....I'm going to my girlfriends now to explain how I measure trunks.....

The one in the quote brackets is one of your tridents, the other one a pyracantha. Right?

Measure trunks by the foot!

There are no tridents in the op

That is correct. The one I meant with "first tree you posted" is the one in the OP. The trident however is in those quote brackets I in my first post in this thread.
Still curious about your opinion on showing those 2! :)

I have nothing to post. My thickest trunk atm is hot bagged as it was collected only a few weeks back. But I am certainly enjoying looking at and reading everyone else's posts. There is great enjoyment in seeing more mature, already trained trees posted by group members here to inspire us all.

Funny how you complain about sub par show trees, ask for trunk size on finished bonsai and then your first tree you post has big wire on in the apex lol.

I'm a pretty reasonable guy, ask anyone whom I agree with....
You were on ignore with me for one simple reason. You like to be a smartass with out first checking your facts. I can debate with anyone and make a point as long as everyone stays on track. If you can't keep your facts straight and want to just go out on tangents then you look like your hiding something...usually that is a lack of focus or just not very intelligent about the subject matter.

This is the opening statement I made:

Now please use common sense and only post replies that have to do with "bonsai". You know, trees that are well established and fit the definition of what bonsai is. Ramified branches that are well defined. Residing in a bonsai pot and ready to be displayed in an exhibit.

Read it again just for me please and then highlight the part where I asked for finished trees? None of my trees are finished and I bet a lot of Ryan's trees and Walter's trees are not finished. By finished do you mean dead? Thats the definition of a finished tree. I have many trees that I annually show and exhibit and many of them have had wire on them either that year or still have wire on them even during the show. If you knew the subject matter better you would have a better grasp on this process.

Just out of curiosity, would you exhibit that firethorn? Why (not)?

Have before:

And would you display this one? Why (not)?

If you would, in which room would they be put?

Have no idea...don't belong to that group and rather than make a statement I know nothing about I will not make myself look stupid by trying to impress you with the thought process of a club I know nothing about.

The trunks on both are very fucking nice, that has gotta be said! These questions are not judgemental btw, just out of curiosity..

Thanks
Just so you know I am offended by using language like that on a public forum. It makes you look small. It is not necessary.

Picture of the maple as it is tonite. Just a picture on my kitchen table.

This was the tree 8 years ago when I purchased it, knowing full well what I was going to do with it and how I was going to get there.

That winter I went to work chopping the tree down to working stump and developed from there with grafting, pruning, wireing and having a mindful purpose.

On a special note....neither that first branch on the left nor the larger branch on the right went into the final tree as it is today.

At BIB, the large trees get the room to the right, and the smaller ones are in the room to the left, down the hall. It’s by size, not quality. There are fewer trees in the “Big tree” room. There’s fewer tables, and each tree gets more space than in the other room.

You got to let this stuff go Adair...no one cares...

If in the future Boon needs help setting up a show, tell him to give me a call and I can show him how to integrate the small trees with the larger trees for better interest without looking so boring. That way all the trees are seen as a whole and not separated by size. There is no need for that.

And no, I don't mean setting each large tree with a small tree looking pseudo Kokufu. By the end of the "smaller tree" room I was ready to take a long break. It was boring as hell.

Hi Smoke,
I know my tree doesn’t qualify for your thread because it doesn’t live in a bonsai pot. I am trying to gain good growth and more girth, and learn how to ramify branches better. Trunk is about 1 - 1.5 inches etc.
This is a NZ native (Metrosideros umbellata, is about 5 years old with cool bark, and flowers at Xmas.

I hope you don’t mind me joining your thread.

just my two cents, big is neither necessary nor enough, the very first tree showed may be globally nice and a nice trunk, but with such an ugly base made of circling fused roots, it will always remain something of inferior quality.

I see. The only reason I posted this was because you stated you didn’t know how the show was set up. So, I thought I’d let you know.

Obviously, us mere mortals can no longer provide stimulating art worthy of your time and attention. So, I suggest that you might rather spend your time playing with your own trunk at home rather than drive all the way to Oakland to view the BIB show only to be bored.

I shouldn't need to know how its set yup, thats the point. Do it right and remove all doubt.

Good thing your not the promotional chair......it's obvious your not good at criticism.

Bigger isnt always better.... but it usually is :)
Bigger is always better. One only says this when they don't have bigger. I don't care what Judy says it goes with both contexts.

Hey man, I'm just a noob here, and maybe you'll set me right, but it almost sounds like you've allowed yourself to become jaded to enjoy a nice tree when you see one.... I doubt that all the "small trees" were truly as boring as you make them sound.

I think Boon must be doing something right...

Why does it have to be such a hardline argument about the set up of trees at a show???

I think I could enjoy nice bonsai anywhere.

You sound like an overly picky/ anal home inspector...

Oops....I said anal...?
