Here's a question

Rockwell.

You shouldnt buy anything.

Find some things to dig.

Plant some seeds.

One thing for sure. We are all jealous of the years you have! Take advantage of them.

I wanted to add learn how to dig and collect trees that way too. Free is always best. When I was 14 trees were something to hide behind from the cops.
In all seriousness Porter I'm 50 and it's still hard for me to just watch trees grow. Patience is an art all in itself. Once you master it, and it does take time and practice it will help in everything you do. Not just bonsai.

Wow... 'read my posts and then we can discuss my contributions'. Lol. I hate typing "lol" by the way. But I am literally laughing at what a pompous tool bag you are for saying that. You know what's smaller than this guys bonsai trees? .... Check his shorts.

'Read my threads and see how smart i am'...

You are out of line Texas. Brian is one of the most generous posters online, not only here but in his blog. His trees tell the story of his skill. He reponds with good advice to many posters including the OP.

The OP BTW has been less than forthright concerning his experience and skills.

Honesty is a great thing. No more deceiving. Just be up front and honest about your level and limitations and you will get much better and more applicable advice to your specific needs and situation. Good luck. I'm glad you have such an interest at your age. I wish I would have gotten more serious into learning the real art of bonsai earlier in life......though I'm sill young at 35 y/o. :)

It is interesting to think about this subject, bonsai and age. I started when I was eleven, moved to California, joined the Marin County Bonsai Club and chaired the annual show two year latter. I was fifteen years old. Some people would claim I have learned little since then but the world is full of people that will try to beat you down no matter how good or mediocre you are. Do bonsai because you want to do bonsai. Seek your own vision and don't let someone talk you into buying a piece of stock you cannot afford.

I have always used the nursery trade mostly because of availability, and then there is the cost factor. If you live in a place where collecting natural dwarfs is possible I would investigate that source; these are loosely called Yamadori trees. You have right now about as much use for a LeerJet than you have for a thousand dollar pre-bonsai, you probably do not have a clue what to do with either. Your best option right now would be to find a mentor/teacher to show you how this stuff is done.

Hi guys,
Well, sorry for asking the same questions.
looks like this thread turned into an argument.
I'll stop posting for a while and get some hands on experience from clubs.
Thanks,
Porter
Also, I might break away from the pine category because, I'm a newbie. So I'm heading for maples and deciduous trees. also, I don't have $150 to spend on a good size tree, so thats why I buy saplings or 1 gallon stock

Hang in there, Porter. This place is filled mostly with old, stodgy guys like me:p...we need new blood like you with all the enthusiasm you have. I've got a 14 yr old daughter and I WISH she was into bonsai...horses win hands down, the potted trees never had a chance:mad:.

You should be glad it was horses that won...with my (soon to be 25 y.o.) son it is the Play Station, Wii, DS, online gaming, comicon, anime, etc. I thought girls will be higher up there by now but they are a distant 2nd....or 3rd. :( Not sure if it is good or bad.

At any rate, (to the OP) I agree...keep the enthusiasm up and keep doing bonsai. Some here do not believe you can do bonsai w/o professional instructions...I disagree (but agree it will help a lot if you can take advantage of it). We all learn differently and as long as you are HONEST with your yourself of your capabilities (or lack of), you can find the best way (w/ the resources available to you) to do bonsai. Be it just books, or online videos, or forum like this.

Good luck!

I think this should be encouraged, in my experience an intuition is developed in people who start their hobbies at an incredibly young age.

For as long as I can remember my hobbies were metal and woodworking, and I'm sure after 1000 stupid questions it finally started to sink in. They are both almost impossible for me to avoid at this point in my life, I still spend a great deal of my day working out the details of projects I'm doing.

I am incredibly lucky in that I had two fantastic mentors willing to take my enthusiasm and put it to good use.

Hi,
I have a mentor, like I already said. I haven't met him in 2 years, because life gets busy.
But I will attend the club and meet him again. He learned bonsai from a japanese guy.
I really love bonsai. for the past 3 years. Its a passion since I was very little. Like gardening and landscaping.
Thanks, and I plan on sticking with this hobby.
Porter
also, I think I need to go to my mentor for collecting tree's. He knows a lot about where to get them and stuff. It took him 3 years to collect this cascade like JBP thats almost 800 years old!:D

Are you really saying that? I read all of Brian's posts and they show that he knows what he is talking about. Your posts on the other hand. Well....... let's just say not so much. By the way . How old are you? Check your shorts indeed.

Have a great day.

I've got a 12 year old son who has a wii and an xbox with all bells and whistles...and he wants a different gaming platform now (play station?)...:mad:. Yeah, I'm living that dream, too.

I do Bonsai demonstrations for 4H and other NPO organizations. There are some your age with the same interests that show up every year and even bring plants to work on. It is great to see young people with an interest in Bonsai. Also, there are some here, myself included that can and will send starter plants for free if your parents say it is ok. Pretty simple honest, they just need to call and I will send a phone number in PM.

I'm 36. And no. The generally accepted grammatical convention is that single quotations are used to paraphrase.

I'm an English teacher and no, they are not. You use "" for quotations. ' is an apostrophe. You only use '...' as quotation marks when there is a quotation inside of a quotation. For example: Brian said, "I heard Billy tell Sally, 'You can't have any of my ice cream!'"

Sorry, but this is the first time I've been a legit expert on ANYTHING posted on Bnut. Forgive me, please.

Hi,
Here's another question.
Does anyone on here donate beginner tree's? Like, Im already hooked up with someone, but I heard people will donate stock to beginners. or does anyone know who sells on here?
Thanks,
Porter

Paraphrase, parachute, grammatical convention, who cares? You could still figure out the general meaning right?

Home Depot has nice little Boxwoods for $6, and considerably larger (1-2" trunks) ones for $18. Similarly, they have 1-2" trunked Bougainvilleas for $13.

You'll be hard pressed to find anything cheaper online, when you throw in shipping.

Look at local nurseries too- they will sometime have more "unique" stock.
