Cut it back to a stump after several years, and once it thickened up enough, just pruned the shoots back pretty short every couple years. It doesn’t have any chop scars left on the trunk itself, and only a few on the primary branches. Current shot:

Great, and will you get a second flush? Do you prune only new growth or did you prune past that to older growth?

No significant second flush.
Summer trimming is of new growth, back to 1-2 nodes. Fall pruning is to remove crossing or too-heavy branches. It’s all in the thread.

Repotted today. Decided to use this Sara Rayner pot for a change. Been kind of bored with the collection lately and have been doing a lot of pot change-ups for fun. Think this one actually works ok. Looking back on this thread, I think I’ll let the tree grow a little taller again this year.

It has a funny meaning in Japanese too. 乳 chi chi - Can be a juvinial way to refer to breasts. Akin to "boobies"

What a great tree and a great thread!! I have a few from seed [apparently some Oriental markets stock seeds so one can avoid the stinky part of the process] and some I dug up from under trees at Lewis and Clark. When you were annual chopping, was the chop above buds or just a whack?
