Frost warning AGAIN-90 in two days

It's May 2, so it's time for mid-90 degree weather and hazardous air quality warnings...Frost only two days ago...

Very similar here only it was 37 - 38. The AC has been on since though with 80's for the rest of the week. Seems we skipped Spring, sigh...

My backyard thermometer read 92 yesterday at around 4. Haven't turned the AC on yet as it cooled to 50 last night (might have been colder) as the humidity was pretty low. Next couple of days will be bad though with 90+ forecast. Ahh summer in D.C.--can't wait to peel myself off the car seat vinyl after driving to work for the next six months...

Ahh summer in D.C.

Asphalt Jungle, just like all the major Cities, I am not that far from Philly and it is always 5 - 10 degrees warmer there, no thanks :P

Fortunately I think we are past the frosty nights in Middle Tennessee for now. I am seeing several comments about folks finding out that it had frosted then spraying down their plants with water. Can anyone tell me more about that process or drop me a link to explaining why you spray your trees down with water the morning after a frost?

Fun huh? Add in the traffic and it's extra good times. I lived in Woodbridge from birth until 2004, and do not miss Northern VA even a tiny little bit. Summers are just as bad here but at least we're moving.

The idea is that, as water freezes, it releases heat. That heat will potentially decrease or completely prevent the potential damage caused by frosts and freezes. It doesn't do any good if the damage has already occurred, so you need to spraying when temps are hitting their coldest... usually just before sunrise.

Thanks for the explanation!

We have wind and rain this week and snow on the rim 90 miles north of me. Keep your warmies on back there.

I have also heard heat is created by the plants because they use energy to absorb water.

I also find it very strange to have weather alerts concerning "Wildfire" We have had more snow and rain then the last few years combined -

We had a red flag day yesterday. It was in the 80’s and windy also in the 80’s today. A brush fire a couple of miles from my brother’s house got into an industrial park, and several businesses went up in flames. One had a bunch of 55 gallon drums of chemicals go up. A friend that works in the area said the fires were really hot, and he hightailed it out of there when the first barrel exploded.

We play with bon fires every weekend, and he said these fires were just too scary.

When will Winter get here?

Simple answer is that the water on the surface of leaves has to freeze before the underlying leaf. Apple, orange and other crop fruit growers do this all the time.

That's because the air has been extremely dry in the last few weeks, like, according to the hygrometer in the backyard, below 1- percent on some days. That level is desert air dry. Add a wind and surface water evaporates quickly, leaving behind dried out timber, old leaves etc. that are ripe for fire.

Interesting but here the Humidity has been in the high 90's for a long time, Home humidifier and plant room have rarely run. Today in the AM it was 24 percent and the warnings were issued. It is not like we are having extreme winds either...

Calling for 93 high today, I heard this morning... possible record breaking.

Until a few days ago it was mostly 10F under average throughout Winter and April. The Central AC has been on 3 days now straight with 80'sF creeping up to 90... "shrugs" :P

Yeah!

You know.....
Something else I took notice of 2 days ago....
I hear a news report saying that our region is going to have 3x as many disease carrying mosquitoes and other bugs like fleas, than normal this year...
They said it's due to higher than normal temperatures....

But in previous days I heard reports saying that due to the extended winter temps, we are seeing disrupted migratory patterns of birds and less insects of all kinds....

I don't know what these clowns want us to believe!!!

I have seen hummingbirds in my yard already. But I don't know when they usually show up, so I guess that's a useless bit of info.
