So what are your "from seed" projects for 2018?

Here are mine:

1- Taxodium Distichum (Bald Cypress) 100+ seeds in the pink cookie box
2- Zelkova Serrata (Japanese Zelkova) 30 seeds
3- Acer Buergeranum (Trident Maple) 100+ seeds
4- Pinus Thunbergii (Japanese Black Pine) 1000+ seeds for the 6 year JBP contest
5- Crataegus Monogyna (European Hawthorn) 30 seeds already in the fridge for the cold stratification process (my blog post about it: https://shumibonsai.wordpress.com/2...m-seed-2018-scarification-and-stratification/ )

I collected a handful of seeds from some kind of maple tree that I parked my truck next to, down in DC.
I tried researching the exact type of maple, but I was unsuccessful in finding it.
Hopefully when they grow, someone here will be able to ID.
Planted some as singles, and some as groups or clumps.

I'm going to start more Ginkgo like I did last year. Japanese black pine, Scots pine from cones collected from a city park, Austrian pine, green Japanese maple seeds from a neighbor's tree, some unidentified Japanese maple seeds from my brother-in-law's house (the seeds were tiny!). Bigtooth maple seeds from the mountains around here and Gambel Oak from the same mountains. I think that's it so far!

So far I've got some pin oaks and scotts pine going from seed, and some pomegranates. The poms aren't specifically for bonsai but if enough germinate some might be relegated into the bonsai zone lol

Im starting a lot of stuff! If anyone has any tips on any of these let me know. Starting from
Seeds:
Trident maple

Arakawa jap maple

Jap red pine

Jap larch

Jap camellia

Acer monspessilanum

Pinus Armandii Chinese white pine

Wisteria sinensis (Chinese wisteria

Pinus parviflora (Japanese black pine)

Pinus densiflora (jap white pine)

Carpinus tyrczaninowii (Korean hornbeam

Acer ginnala

Prunus subhirtella pendula (winter cherry)

Pinus triloba (flowering plum)

Lagerstroemia indica (Crepe Myrtle)

Acer campestre (field or hedge maple)

Liquidambar styraciflua (sweet gum)!
Wish me luck I’ve never grown anything from seed.

Hi
May i suggest you keep the seeds separated by source when stratifying and germinating. I mention this because of dissapointing experience with germination rate and health of the seeds from WhatCom Seed Co.

Just soaked and planted 100 scots and 100 mugo and placed them out side for some natural stratification, got a handfull of zelkova, and jmaple in the fridge, and,ill be out collecting some ornamental crabs to start soon too. Not like I need more seedlings I'm just addicted.

I'm planning on doing that. I'll see what those seedrack.com seeds will do. If it's really as bad as you say I'll be sure to let everyone know on this board.

I'm gonna do some field maple seeds too. I almost forgot!

These are the seeds I am going to try this year:

Pinus Thunbergii Japanese Black Pine (for the contest)
Prunus Serrulata Japanese Flowering Cherry
Acer Buergerianum Trident Maple
Malus Sylvestris French Crab Apple
Ulmus Americana American Elm

All the seeds are from Sheffield's.
These are all seeds I haven't grown or have failed in the past to grow. I am expecting much better quality seeds from Sheffield's than companies I have tried in the past. Fingers crossed!

I have ordered from Sheffield's before, and have gotten pretty good results. Good luck

Quick piece of advice, soak your seeds in a 20:1 (maybe weaker) or so peroxide solution as opposed to just water. It will kill the pathogens and provide a source of oxygen to the seed and help to dissolve the seed coat.

My projects that are coming very soon are a few thousand elms (thanks, @AZbonsai), goji, zelkova that I have laying around, and tamarind. At least...

Plumeria
Pomegranate
Japanese Persimmon
Baja Fairy Duster (Calliandra Californica)
Juniper
Coast Live Oak
Southern Live Oak
California Black Oack
Cork Oak
Red Oak
Willow Oak
Water Oak
Jeffery Pine(local wild tree)
JBP,MikawaJBP,Mkawa Kuromatu JBP,JBP,JBP ahhhhhhhhhh:eek:

............That should be it.

Pinus Parviflora is Japanese White Pine

Pinus Densiflora is Japanese Red Pine

Pinus Thunbergii is Japanese Black Pine
Thanks for the corrections! I just cut and pasted that from my notes. I must have had them mixed up.

These sprouted faster then I expected. Hope they will be okay till they can go outside.
