I like this. What would be a reasonable trunk caliper benchmark for a 9 year old fast-growing tree? About an inch?

After doing some reading, for some fast-growing species it's could be more like 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) trunk caliper when ground grown for 9-10 years.

I think that's a reasonable trunk caliper upper limit for a starting point for the seedling division and it also gives people some latitude to have a breadth of tree sizes and ages in their forest. Do people agree? That being said, I think this will be based on the honor system and I wouldn't want to tell someone to discard a tree just because it was 2.51 inches.

This sounds great. I'm definitely in on a group planting from seed. My only issue is that my seeds are already in seed trays stratifying for germination next spring. Will there be a problem with using them? I'd start with pictures of the trays.

Yeah, a picture of the seedling tray now and then again when the seeds begin to germinate would be fine. I wouldn't want to make people dig up some seeds that they already planted.

OK, here is a draft of the new plan.
Please include some feedback!
Hopefully we can finalize this by next week or so.

2021 Forest From Seed(ling) 6 Year Contest
This will be a contest with two independent divisions - a "from seed" division and a "sapling" division.

Common Guidelines applying to both divisions
  • Contestants may participate in one or both divisions, but each planting may only belong to a single division
  • Contestants may start as many plantings as they like, but must choose one to submit for final judging per division
  • Any species of plant are allowed
  • You can mix species within a single planting if you like
  • There must be at least four individual plants in the final planting. A clump (one plant with multiple trunks) is ok to include within your planting, but each clump only counts as one plant. There is no maximum number of individuals per planting
  • You may move, add, or subtract trees to your planting at any time, but they must comply with the rules of the division (see more in division specific rules below)
  • You must document the forest at least yearly and also after any re-arrangements or major work.
  • Between 2021 and 2027, plants may be grown however you please (in ground, in pots, whatever). By December 31st, 2027, you must submit up to three photographs (could be different angles or differently zoomed or even different seasons) of your forest in some form of container/slab/rock/pot.
  • Stands, companion plants, and/or moss are not necessary to include in the final pictures, but are encouraged.
  • "Most pleasing forest" winner (1 per division) will be determined by popular vote. I will try to source some prizes.
  • There will also be a vote for "Most pleasing unconventional forest" (1 per division), but there might not be prizes for the winners here. "Most pleasing unconventional forest" is up to the voter to decide what that means...but some things that might qualify include mixed-species plantings, uncommon species for forest plantings, a unique use of a container.
  • There will also be a vote for "Best documentation of their forest's progression" (1 per division), but there might not be prizes for the winners here.
  • It is possible to win 2 or all of "Most pleasing forest," "Most pleasing unconventional forest," and "Best documentation of their forest's progression" within a division.

From Seed Division
1. You must take a picture of your future forest in seed form or seeds in tray form on January 1st, 2021 (or later) (if you already sew them in the ground or a flat, that's ok, but include a photo of that space pre-germination).
2. You may begin the process of germinating your seeds on January 1st, 2021 or thereafter -after you have completed #1. This is defined as bringing the seeds up to germination temperature AND putting them into some kind of moist substrate that they can grow in.
3. You may add additional seedlings to your forest at future timepoints, but these seedlings must have been either germinated from seed in 2021 or later -OR- you may also use cuttings/layers from a parent tree that was germinated in year 2021 or later.
4. You may begin multiple forests and document them all within a single thread, but must choose one planting to submit for the final judging.
5. Entitle your thread, "From Seed Division: _________" (include your username and whatever else you want to title your thread)
6. Judging of compositions from this division will have a greater focus on the arrangement and potential of the forest rather than maturity.

Sapling Division
1. You may not use a forest that you have already assembled prior to January 1, 2021.
2. You may use trees that you already own or that you collect, but they must comply with the other guidelines
3. In 2021 (or at the point that that particular plant enters the contest), all plants used must be less than 10 years old (to the best of your knowledge) and with a maximum trunk caliper (per individual plant or clump) of 2.5 inches (6.35 cm)
4. You must take a picture of your saplings un-assembled (either in separate containers or bare-rooted or separately growing in the ground) at some point on or after January 1, 2021.
5. You may add additional saplings to your forest at future timepoints, but these must comply with guideline #3.
6. You may begin multiple forests and document them all within a single thread, but must choose one planting to submit for the final judging.
7. Entitle your thread, "Sapling Division: _________" (include your username and whatever else you want to title your thread)

I was planning on making a forest of 15 of my Acer Buergerianum seedlings I started from seed 3 years ago. So I might as wel enter that project in this contest :)

I would be in for the sapling division; I have about 9 J. Larch seedlings I have been collecting since spring. I've done nothing but prune them up until this point so I think they would be eligible. Already have a final pot for them as well.

Too bad this didn't start last year. I have a tray of Tridents as well. Some of which are destined for a future forest.

I suppose I could document both for the sapling category and go with the best?

Hopefully there is enough interest. I love forests!

Great! The Larch and Tridents are eligible. Looking forward to seeing what you do with them.

are we gonna do this or not ? I believe we should make it 10 years so everyone is happy

We are going to do it! I’ll finalize the contest rules by Tuesday. I would love to do it as a 10 year contest, but I’m worried that some veteran members might pass on it if it’s that long. 10 years is a long time...there are no guarantees that this site will still be running in 10 years.

How about we have an optional 4 year extension where we can keep updating and commenting on each others’ forests. Certainly, I’d love to see some of these forests in pictures or better yet, at shows in 10, 15, 30 years!

Also, after thinking about it, I think we can do 1 thread per forest. It will be much easier to follow progressions and search for a forest of species X if each has their own thread with the species (singular or multiple) in the title.

I have a 100-year NONtest going. 🤣🤣🤣

I’m in. Going to use seeds from Apples from the market. Sounds fun,
Excited to save em and put in fridge for strat!!
like @leatherback said, great holiday project!!
Will post pics soon😊

Hunt crabs, too!!! I’m doing Malus/Crab seed theory this year too! We can compare!

I did 5 wild apples worth (separated and labeled) 2 “wild crab” and 2 “Common crab” apples worth.. as well as Red delicious, honey crisp.. and granny smith....

Fingers crossed hoping for neat mutations. 🤓

You arent going to get a convincing forest from seed to anything close to well anything in less than 10 years and I would argue it will take even longer than that.

Hell even starting with seedlings, it is going to take years

Might be better to be more realistic and think about doing contests that can be accomplished in 5 years or less.
If you want to do something with forests, instead of making it a contest, maybe make it a progression activity where people start a forest and update its progression every year and see where that goes.
People can comment on the progression and each can get advice on how to develop and things they should be doing along the way as it develops.
IMO, that would be more useful then yet another contest.

Absolutely! I remember them growing pretty fast when I tried this years back for fun. Never amounted to much as I neglected them.
This time around I feel better prepared.
I don’t know much about the different 🦀 s,
But will definitely try them as well😊.
Cool cool cool!
happy growing to you!

I like crabapple structure in nature, when left to their own devices they end up... “dark” and “intriguing”.

To you as well, friend!

I mostly agree with your points. But I think framing it as a contest helps people get excited and gives them some extra motivation to both post their stuff and comment/advise on others' threads.

The goal that I'm envisioning for this exercise is not to have a show-winning forest in 6 years, but rather to set people up along that path. And personally I have no idea where that path is...but I'm hoping that some veteran nuts can help lead by example.

In any case, I can't please everyone...but I'm trying hard to strike a compromise that brings along a decent crowd.
