Fonz's Black Pine contest entry

First flush growth came to an end and the needles are expanding.

One of the stronger cuttings:

And the uncut mikawa black pines. The little one in the front is the same age as the rest but for some reason I can't throw it away...

End of year 3 update. I don't think I can expect much more growth in 2020 :)
Removed the fertilizer and weeds in my pond baskets. Also applied some extra wire to lower trunks that could use some more thickening and to trunks that didn't get wired yet.

2 of the contest ones:

Applied some extra wire to a slimmer lower trunk:

My neagari project looks like it took off, will remove the top inch of the plastic tube next year so the roots will start to show:

Got about 5 that didn't get any wiring yet so I decided to start training them as bigger trees, I got time...:

And ofcourse, a family picture:

I just read and saw everything from your progression and it was so cool

I agree. This is fantastic and inspiring. I'm just getting started developing a bunch of young JBPs and I enjoyed seeing your progression. Keep us posted!

You should put a few of them in the ground! 😬

I will, the ones that need to grow bigger, not the ones for the contest.

While repotting the remaining 3 Mikawa pines today I decided to put one over a rock I brought back from Austria last year.
The 3 year old Japanese Black Pine "Mikawa" seedling that I used was one that did ok the 1st year, didn't grow at all the 2nd year, but started to grow again the 3rd year. So it's 1 year behind on all my other JBP seedlings.

Here's the rock that I used. The initial plan was to put Acer P. seedlings on it. Plans change...

The seedling placed over the rock, rafia was used to hold the roots aganst the rocks.

And then the obvious, rock goes into a big container allowing the roots to develop strongly.
