Five Year Native Tree Challenge: Gabler's American Beech #4

This tree has really grown on me, I like it.

And also- you got a successful second flush from pinching it out last spring? Very encouraging

Love the twisting trunks. This turned out really nice!

Yes. I did not get any backbudding like I was hoping for, but I did get a second flush of growth from the base of each leaf in the new growth. For backbudding on old wood, it seems you need to perform a hard chop. On a weak tree, you'll get just a couple of buds, which send out long extension growth. On a strong tree, you get a bush after a hard chop. American beech will produce epicormic shoots at the site of a chop, but they seem to be weaker than the growth from the dormant buds lower along the trunk.

Thanks! It's definitely an oddball tree, but I think it works. I'm optimistic that it will continue to improve with age. It is a bit tricky to develop branching and ramification on such a small beech.
