Extended season starting trees indoors

Up-potted some Mikawa’s

These were getting very crowded. Was about 130 of them and getting to the point of not getting light all the way around. So,I up-potted 30 of them and put about 100 of them into my cool storege refridgerator. They seem to do ok in the cooler as long as temps do not freeze.I keep them beteween 36-40f.Comes in very handy.I read it is a myth that pines need a terminaal bud for cooler storage, this was in a Forestry service article,so we will see about that.
Also extremely high humidity in this refridgerator......about 80-95%.This is a good thing for cold storage of trees.

I up-potted into 1 qt Rootpouches!!!
In Spring I will put these outside a few weeks before sale to really get them growing.

I used a 50/50 perlite/vermiculite media. The added moisture retention comes in extremely handy when these are bigger like this.

I also am running two pure uv bulbs over these to increase the brix and hardines levels in them.......toughens up the leaves and is said to increase photosynthesis too along with thicker needles.......fun stuff.
The pure uv’s come on for 15 minutes every hour for the inside 10 hours of the light cycle(18 hr).
Seems flohrescents are the way to go with supplimental uva/uvb.If you are spending more than $40 to do this it is really a waste of money.
Flourescent the way to go for this purpose if you ask me.............u less you go with plasma grow lights or cmh or something......then you are looking at heat and maybe even comparitivley low levels of uv.
The pure uv bulbs actually put out alot of this spectrum........can actually off your plants by accident with these.

Clonex is a good 1:1 ratio
Hi @cmeg1 ,

Could you please mention the clonex product name which can give 1:1 ratio ? (is it Clonex Mist)?

Also I have read your post #423 details, thanks thanks for that.
It mentions Mothers A and Mothers B in equal part from company (KALLIX), which is NPK 15-0-0 and 5-12-21 respectively.
if you add both of them in equal parts and dilute, which makes the ratio as 10-6-10 (I assume I did right calculation). N:K is 1:1 but there is Phosphorus as well. Can I use some fertiliser which is low in phosphorus or no phosphorus instead?

Sorry for taking your time again, I am new to this field and trying to follow.

Thanks

Clonex solution is if your on the cheap.CLONEX SOLUTION.I use it in all my aeroponic formulas....exactly what its made for.
This season it looks like kalix is largw wholesale only. They are the Parent company to NPK INDUSTRIES.I would go there ,if just starting looking for smaller quantities.
MOTHER A&b is a more complete 1:1 ratio.
Adjust the ec as needed and use on pre seedling cuttings or any propogation material such a s air-layering or motherplants as the 1:1 ratio maintains faster rooting...much better success rate......leave phospherous as is in the formula already. Is needed.
YOU WILL BE MUCH HAPPIER WITH THE LINK BELOW FOR BEGINNING PURPOSES!!!

******** ALSO PLEASE TAKE HIS ENTIRE MASTER CLASS GROW COURSE.(a link on the drop down menu on left of his NPK LINK ABOVE).....You will be a master hydro grower when completed......I recommend the entire video course....sometimes $50 coupons online....do a search.

I only completed his course in 2019😃

If you enjoy this sort of thing I will share my formulas.......all products from his supply.........I go large quantity wholesale as I have the small business. Go Dutch Hydro!!!!!

His master Course is absolutely fascinating!!!
100% AAA+++

Thanks again for the help.

Improvents in the grow room ( supplimental lighting).

Was going to buy some dedicated supplimental lights, but opted to get some hlg propagaters and daisy chain them together........4000k lights are my personal fav as they are veg only blue lights that are already in the tent.As good as t5 for photosynthesis and short stocky growth.

These are 7” longer than I need, but I figure something out.Either stand vertically in corners or my tent will stretch enough to lay horizontally on the somewhat par lacking ends of the tent....or a combo of both.

Stoked about this!!!
Increased base npk strength,co2,and added two pure uva/uvb florescents.....now some undercanopy/interior lighting to help the outer edges of the grow tent.

Very good volume pricing on these......they offer 4 for the price of 2&1/2..........have to buy the longer cordes and splice them together.
Lots of samsung diodes for the price!!!
Should brighten up the outer footprint of my grow nicely........should have huge divedends!!!!

excellent find. seems he's sourcing his pcb boards with leds installed from samsung. very nice. he was smart going with the hlg style design, too. i think supporting small businesses is going to be even more important from now on. looks like this new administration is going to put a lot of small businesses out of business with a mandatory $15hr minimum wage. a lot of downsizing about to happen. a lot of unskilled workers on unemployment.

Was it you who showed me a link with extremely affordable DIY bar& strip lighting(samsung led’s)?
Someone did lol

Budbreak and 10 year old seeds poppin’

Very cool. The 10 year old seeds from Sheffields are sprouting! Korean Hornbeam......not sure if coreana or what.Very easy to tell once they are a bit older.

My coreana seedling air layers are poppin’ some green in the buds.

Also chaenomeles are sprouting..............all of these seedlings are destined for seedling air-layers in the aeroponic cloner. This time around with proper motherplant preperations for a higher success rate.

Increased NPK on the mature Mikawa JBP seedling cuttings. Also increased co2 up to 1200 ppm.And more yet, will be adding supplimental lighting to boost the growing footprint from all directions with a more even, intense par rating of between 900-1100 par.......like the center of the grow is getting currently............This can be done only with co2 fertilization,as anything approaching 1000 par and beyond would normally create carb limitation in the grow.Even with fresh air coming in.
I recently have deduced that in an intensed growth environment with co2 and mature trees setting buds and everything ,that they will probably benefit from much increased base NPK like a flowering stage/flowering cycle strength should be.
I used to never go over 1.6 EC,but these are so mature I believe they will benefit from much higher EC.I have the nutrient base NPK pushed up to 2.3 EC .......about 1150 ppm!!!
They were just up-potted a week ago,so when they acclimate from all that they will really start looking good.Already showing a nice green leaf.
When these Rootpouches are dense with roots there will be nothing stopping these large Mikawa.........the dense vigorous rootball will actually be essential to their survival.........These should stay on till’ next Spring. They can be set into another pot,but left inside the Rootpouch yet.......submersed for moisture conservation.
Pulling the 1Qt pouches off later this season would be an very uneccesary set back.

Zelkova seedling air-layers on the way ( for sale).
Just obtained 1/4lb of fresh seed. These should root no problem in the aeroonic cloner.......seedling air-layers.

Can legally ship these,so probably small size, good rooted starts. Will post on CMBONSAI thread when I get results.

Working in the room.

Was working big time past couple mnths.
Changing profession yet again,so have a mnth vacation and was able to organize the electricity in the room with the free time. Can get out of hand sometimes and end up having too many goofy setups with the plugs and outlets when time is limited.
Anyway I have had the big light connector for some time, but have not used it for awhile.....now that I have 4 sets of lights there could not be a better time.Nice German? timer and dedicated timed outlet also. This is safer to have the big lights all coming on same time......makes quite a loud bang as it turns on & off. Some real deal stuff with the switch in it.Safer this way as I once had a freind check all the amps of my outlets while lights were on this unit and not plugged into various outlets.

The Mikawa’s are greening up.Probably just starting to settle after potting.I upped everything.....lots of fertlizer,co2 & light......can’t wait to get the four light strips tuesday!!!
Experimenting with high EC nutrient, high co2 and high light intensity that can only be pulled off in co2 growing.74C52BB7-DE57-4AE9-874E-BC08703572E1.jpeg99C14FF2-A0EE-499C-BA1F-CA932064FB89.jpeg

Enjoying the new growing media!!!

I upped the vermiculite to 50% .I am enjoying it thus far.Along with the 1Qt Rootpouch I feel there is plenty of oxygen in the media.
Good to balance out the extra photosynthesis with respiration in the media so the proper microbes can get to work to assist with the other half of the eqation of co2 fertilization and feed on the root exudates and produce amino acids and a host of other beneficial plant elements including NPK right at the roots to let the leaves have a rest and store energy instead of producing so much........assimilating N in solution uses as much as 30% of photosynthetic energy!!!

The 50/50 perlite & vermiculite( both grade #2 essentially) holds much water, but at the same time has lots of air it seems....especially in a Rootpouch.Looks a win win.As long as there is oxygen I see no need to ‘let dry’ slightly as that really assumes a risk in young plants.
When these are packed tight with root they will be verry happy and vigorous trees.....They were just potted about a week ago!!!

Doing the Mikawa Pines and customers a service!

Ok,the hlg light bars are stricktly propogation.....way cool, but as about as intense as 80 w t5.Will be fine propovation lights that I will use since blue spectrum.

Ok,enter the new light.I just have to see these Mikawas grow in some even light from all directions so got another Led.An HLG 300 L bspec( blue spectrum) qb.
These two boards have a total of 4 rows of sky blu diodes that turn the 3500k into a dedicated Veg only grow light. Will blend perfectly with the 4000k I am using.
Every year I always up the light to like 1100 par only to find it a bit too strong..... seems I forget this every season lol.
I am liking an even 800 par across the entire grow footprint.......my favorite lighting is when two souces or lights blend together and work together at a higher level above the canopy and also at a lower wattage by using the dimmer knob. They overlap very nicely.
I am stoked about this in a couple days we’re gonna really up par in there and get them Pines very happy photosynthesis all the way down to the trunks....wahooooo!!!

these are nice lights some of Samsung‘s newest diode‘s and HLG’s technology.Very efficient and redesigned abit narrower and longer I believe.

Another light recipe addition!!!

Ok,so I read an article on light recipes.I alway new blue spectrum does anlot for veg like increase chlorophyl, photosynthesis and good stocky growth......couple this with the cytokinines in the kelp and hopefully even more low branching.
I got some blue light suplliments from Amazon.
Led’s in the 450-460 spectral range.
I imagine Only 1 of these in a small tent is good.....there are over 100 led’s on these....all blue. They have good 180 degree coverage......actually excited to see if this helps.
Sciance does not seem too advanced......just experiment and see what you get.
Look at this article from Harley Smith.

KEEPING THE MIKAWA SEEDLING CUTTINGS MOIST.

I like these to remain moist. They are aerated in a 50/50 medium grade vermiculite & #2 perlite.Great mix actually in a Rootpouch.
I do not like the these to dry at all really, especially as the rootballs get dense I will appreciate the top layer I applied today.
I am always on the lookout for a moisture conserving top layer.Orchid spahgnum and others work great, but can get some really ugly fungus and discoloration.
Today I applied a very thin layer of the medium vermiculite on all the pots.I cannot really see it picking up strange funguses and stuff we will see. Will totally come in handy here in the next mnth when these start really growing roots.
These will probably actually grow minimal top growth over the next couple mnths other than thickening and some density, but they will surely be photosynthesizing and gettiing energy stores(brix).
I love these things!!!!
Starting to look right!!!
I will put them out in Spring to get them pushing just before sale.
Serious head start with these.

the proptek tray seedling cuttings seem ok

These actually seem to have a more compact look to them. They are especially tiny and mature needles poppin’.Nice to think they may be getting dense roots with the addition of the fabric lining(Rootpouch).

I also added some blue spectrum lighting by way of an led bulb. The bulb adds about 50-100 par throughout the tent of blue spectrum light between 450-460 nm wavelength.More intense than I thought it would be actually.

Will be cool if these totally stay compact and branch profusely!!!
