Extended season starting trees indoors

Cryptomeria seedling cuttings.

I started these seedling cuttings 5 weeks ago when I did all the Mikawa’s.
I guess thats not too slow. They are coloring more to normal as they turned red and I thought they were gonners, but looking to grow now.As these roots get big they should get more vigorous then I increase the nitrogen. On the root starter now with minimal nitrgen another week or so.
Nice roots when I looked a couple weeks ago....just keep these in the tray quite awhile I guess...maybe more in the future...see how they do first.
Honestly the slowest part is pre-cutting stage from the germination...takes twice as long as JBP.
These are cool though!!!I like them.Actually bigger now than the Mikawa cuttings struck at same time.
I have noticed these cryptomeria have a tendency to bust lots of roots right out of base of needles!
Totally awesome if you ask me.
I may pot a couple up in Rootpouch to see effect on vigor.More roots= more bio-stimulant intake= way more vigor.BAD4D5EB-6DC0-421F-AF54-ACD8B0291927.jpeg2AF3649B-3C23-4522-AF9E-602951A69900.jpeg

potted up the cryptomeria

A few had awesome rooting...should definately help a slow grower like these.
Had 50% success of quality rooting out of about 20 or so cuttings.
I did not use bottom heat with these...probably why.

When you water the cuttings are you using any nutrients after you’ve done the cuttings or do you just use regular water until strong roots have developed?

See post#535.
No npk untill I know complete radial roots are there ....whatever size they are.....
.4 ec of clonex or tour whole nutrient/rootstarter or whatever.I recommend root starter...low npk...& 1/16th tsp monoammonium phospate....ends up being .6 ec or less

Have my first ever cutting project coming up on some Jeffery Pine. Just waiting for those first leaves to pop like Jonas recommends. Are these them??? Lol

cleaned out the tent for crop of Mikawa’s

Nice to clean out the tent between crops.Conveniant bath tray in bottom to remove and scrub.
Got some new grates for the floor of the tent.
Nice and neat....still have 120 more Mikawa’s to transplant....will fill my 2nd tent also with them.

The Chinese elm air-layer looks good. The other two are a bit slower from the agressive shaping.

The little seedling cutting is absolutely rediculous with it extending 11 shoots already!!!
10 of which are right on top of roots😆
Nice one for sure....only 14 weeks old yet.

Also see the row of miscolored cryptomeria....seems normal for the species.

Probably when shoot starts to extend and before its woody.
Best results with dip&gro at the 10x strength for 5 minute dip!!!
Do not let the succulent green leader start to extend though...it will just callous extremely heavy and never root....Jbp stems get a deep red usually when best time

I will eventually get these Mikawa potted up.Have about 70 more to go...I ran out of pots!!!!
Roots are huge!!!
Filling the 2nd tent now.
100% success rate from about 150 cuttings......awesomeness!!!
All radial rooting😉

Mikawa’s nearly all potted up!!

135 potted up and only two duds😆
Feeling pretty confident with my seedling cutting skills.
Will have 150 total when I finish in a couple days.
I am noticing that these get much more vigorous quicker if you leave them be in the trays the whole 3 week root starting phase...and perhaps another week. The roots get crazy huge and they have better overall color. So I may start practicing this with every batch. What I get for running out of pots...
Here are loads of pictures !!!

nice color to the Mikawa pines

This batch that was let longer before the transplanting have much vigor and great color.
Definately will do this for now on.
Possibly the pure uv lamp is helping too.....could be less co2 also......running everything at 900 ppm now.
Also standard veg at 400-600 ppfd. The 18 hr cycle is totally sufficient with this.
Maybe when mature can bump up only slightly.

one of them already has 4 leaders...an odd ball for sure!
I may be keeping that one😀

@cmeg1, a quick question.
Are you still using the flood and drain to waste?
How often are you flooding and how long do you let the water sit before draining?
Thanks!!

No....drain to waste to me is simply hand watering with anpump sprayer fresh nitrient every time and shop vac the tent floor of water.
Important to elevate ur pots on a grid of sorts.......no sitting in water........eventually makes root fungus.
Here is mine......I mix in a bucket with a hand drill and paint mixerD2B36F77-FB6C-4D96-BA64-B2DCB65EEE08.jpeg91D7DB1C-EBF1-47BB-AA68-F583D2F22D13.jpeg

Hey, I grabbed a handful of your jbp from the last batch you sold, enough to experiment with one or two. Do you have any recommendations on what I should do to bring it from a spectacular start to a shohin or larger bonsai?

Fulvic acid and kelp on leaves once a week.
5:2 ratio 1/8tsp fulvic acid/1/16th tsp kelp...POWDERS!!!
Give roots 5:2 Humic acid /kelp .......daily.
Lower npk
Add L glycine& L glutamate amino acids....increase calcium 1000’s of times.
Make sure there is calcium in nutrient......ph
I will show u later I have threads of exact methods.....a bit busy now
