Extended season starting trees indoors

Coreana Hornbeam aeroponics update.

Alright! 12 days and I am getting roots on many of them. Some will be outstanding, though you never know..maybe more than I think.
The other cloner has a different recipe,so will see if they are quicker without hormone.
These will be killers!
Glad I have another tray of these and also gives hope for the easier varieties like elm and zelkova and such....maybe some evergreens too.Nothing like good roots first.Works wonders.
And honestly, thicker stems will probably yeild better results ,as less prone to rooting issues and root like proper seedling air-layers...MORE RADIAL.Like these couple in the pics.

@cmeg1

Mine have exploded and have the craziest extensions. Probably going to develop both into sumo style informal uprights. Thriving in the fog and water ph of 9.5

Really? I would consider dropping to the 6. Range.
Or is this a typo?

Nope. I supplement with rain water When I have it but thats it. Thats my city water PH.

Other than that, just organic pelletized fert once a month, with humic/fulvic every two weeks and seaweed every two weeks.

I know it should be lower, but Im getting great results without messing with it.

Mine have already done 2 pushes and look like they might do a 3rd. Very heat tolerant, when I got them I raked out a lot of the perlite and transplanted in turface and perlite before I read your instructions but that didn't even set them back any. I have mine in 6in bulb pans. I'll post pics tomorrow when it's sunny

Coreana Hornbeams at 12 weeks

Wow these are both 12 week seedlings!
The seedling air-layering takes time, but is worth it.Not to say the roots on the regular seedling will not be good.Rootpouch does a fantastic job of making a dense healthy rootball with more compact branching.

potted some coreanas.

These are such little plants that the roots stop growing,so I just potted them up.
I am happy with this seedling air-layer technique though.Slightly bigger seedlings will be more productive.like 1/4” stems.
After these are all potted I have zelkova to put in.Then after that, chinese elms.
The pine seedling cutting is about to root.....may do them in there all the time. Will see how the roots look on them.

As far as design selection goes are whorls on seedlings still considered a problem? How long could I let them grow without concern for inverse taper?

Pine seedling cuttings.......faster results 16 days

These seedlings were givin foliar feeds of fulvic acid/kelp 5:2 ratio with yucca powder more then recommended once per week.I use an atomizing mist to really spread onto waxy pine seedlings like this.
Any deciduous leaf will burn in no time if more than once a week.
Young pine starts seem a little more impervious to the treatment though. Before cutting,I did about 5 treatments at 3-7 days apart to really get these pumpin’ before making the cuts. Then of course hydrate two hours beforend of light cycle and make cuts.

Getting a good percentage of radial rooting.
As they get callous,I start spraying in the medium also to stimulate rooting the kelp foliar.
I like the shorty domes and also an 1/8” or so of water in bottom of tray for high humidity@ 85F degrees for first week or so until I see callous then bank down to 78f to excellerate rooting.
I will pot these in about 5 days probably!
Dip&grow 10x strength for 4-5minutes!

I also did a bit more light intensity and seems beneficial........arond 200 or so par this time around.

transplanted remaining Creana Hornbeam

Makes for a fun morning. The leaves of these little guys(all 400 or so in a6x8 pan get tons of salts on the first Leaves, but healthy non-the-less with rinsing and loads of amino acids and bio stimulants.
I went theough and selected the thickest stems. So nothing wrong with just keeping loads in a pan.
The first crop are looking real good.
Co2 @ 1300-1500 ppm😆Will sell this first crop throughout August so people can prepare for Autumn.I will bump up the fertilizer today to sweeten these up a bit!!!04F27A11-057B-466F-A5BF-F69F1BC30AB3.jpeg

different maple cultivars into growth

ukon,orange dream,Katsura.
They got mixed, but oh well.Just glad to see them pushing in this light.about 400-500 par @ 18 hrs.Kind of fun for a maple!!!
New growth looks much more balanced from the transition foliage at the bareroot potting they underwent.
I will even let the understock push some to get some green seedlings going.
Hopefully cuttings then maybe get more serious. On the mother formula and preparing nicely.Good to see them push at .4 EC 👍

I will probably dim the light some more at 400par.
That way is essentialy equal to great dappled light, but 18 hrs of it!!!!!
And co2.
Actually hope this works. It is very easy to enjoy these beautiful colors.
Seems the kelp is initiating a very even bud burst at every node!I don’t believe this to be exactly normal on Japanese Maple,so good to see the extra backbudding I so love from use of the kelp foliar feeds that I get on a lot of species(though not all).
This is definately experimental phase.I do like how the new foliage that I grew is looking though.

potted aeroponic seedling air-layers

This would work better with thicker stemmed larger plants.I still prefer it over using little cardboard sleeves though in a pot.
Coreana Hornbeams are not the easiest trees to air-layer either.Let alone a 1/8” trunk .......so looks about 30% success.Have 13 of these radial rooted seedling air-layered dudes✌

Next batch will be zelkova and chinese elm, though the stems will be substantially bigger 3/16-1/4” probably. Will definately push roots quicker being elm type trees.
There are about 20 more of the Coreanas’ in the smaller cloner though....so a few more at least.
These will be cool though....I will leave out the kelp in the nutrient solution while I build roots,so they are not stunted from getting sprayed everday( I water with a pump sprayer). When a bit taller I will add kelp to the root drench.
I think the mono ammonium phosphate will do a fine job in first 3 weeks. Is still important to rinse npk off leaves though......does damage.

Although tiny, these will be some vigorous ,well rooted starts........ when I do up the nitrogen eventually....big roots at the start are always the bomb and make a HUGE differance in terms of effect that bio-stimulant additives and calcium and other growth promoting elements are taken up and produced by the young plant!
