Dry Stall in Midwest?

$15 dlvd for 3 gallons beats the hell out of $34, thats for sure.

Here what gave me hope & agree it's worth ordering a bag to store to see how it is. The "medium" is what we see all the time which if memory serves is 1/2"-1" I think. So I'm hoping "small" means at worst 1/4"-1/2". As for pumice Vance I might try to look around and see if I can find any garden supply that can order it or an ag store that can order dry stall. @Leo in N E Illinois i saw in a different post your source for pumice is a member of the MBS, can I ask how much she charges per bag & does she sell to outsiders?

Also found this source online from an Amazon reviewer complaining about the product they did order being too full of fines & how they tried this one & loved it. Not sure how much 15lbs is or if it's a good price for $25, but would still love a more local option.

seems legit.. my buddy actually owns a soil business and is looking for pallets of pumice which may work out very well for me, if anyone knows a great pallet source feel free to chime in.

We tried to get Telly's green house and Nursery to order some of this stuff by the pallet and we were told that there were trouble with the trunking companies. I don't now know how that is involved but ultimately that would be the best option.

hmm interesting. I got a truck guy too. Ill let you know if I convince my buddy to cop a pallet, I bet he will.

Are you sure we are talking about the same stuff? I know they carry large chunks for landscape purposes but I don't think I have seen what the bag seems to indicate as being what I have been using for years.
It's the same brand. At least at my home depot they do not have scoria in smaller size.

If you read the add you will see it specifically says they will ship to your store if you store does not have it or if you want to pay the shipping they will ship it direct.

I read it through, specifically the product description and reviews for the "small" size rock and the size seems to be around 1/2 inch. Still way too big for bonsai use. Maybe a drainage layer. I'd say you still would be able to sift out for usable smaller particles but after considering the lost in dust as well as unusable large particles you'd be better off paying more for something with more usable soil. The main consideration of this product is landscaping after all, not as a growing medium .

Unfortunately for us in the Detroit area we have to get it shipped in. I just bought a large flat rate box of pumice for $28. That's about 3.5 gallons. Almost 2/3s the cost is for shipping, but around here there's not much choice.

trouble with the trunking companies.

Everyone else turns trunk to truck.

Only Vance gets truck to turn to trunk.

@Leo in N E Illinois I was gonna ask you where you get your pumice from as it should be close to me too. Milwaukee only 2hr drive for me. I titled the post Dry Stall thinking with all the farm supply stores in the state one might carry Dry Stall but I'm guessing more use a different product. Kind of sourcing ingredients to try in a soil mix at the moment. If I can't find smaller lava at any local garden center, I might order this to see the partial size. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Vigoro-0-5-cu-ft-Red-Lava-R3RL/205137359

Anyone else check it out?
Send me a PM, one of the Milwaukee Bonsai Society members, Rita L, if you happen to know her, Rita bought a truck load of Dry Stall, and has been selling to MBS members. She lives about 75 miles northwest of Milwaukee, so she may be very close to you. PM me and I'll give you her number, and tell her who you are so she'll know your not a random nut job. Rita is my source for Dry Stall. Hidden Gardens mentioned earlier is not an impossible distance for me, I can also stock up there.

@Vance Wood and @M. Frary - I've been meaning to get some Dry Stall to you guys, but have not had the ''goof around time'' while on the farm. Mike, I am still planning on making the trip to your neighborhood, and now an old friend is moving to Mount Pleasant in spring, so I have 2 reasons to hear toward your neck of the woods. My friend just took a faculty post in Mount Pleasant at the UM. I will make sure I have bags in the car when I come. Mike is a full 150 miles north of the farm. So it is a long 'day trip'.

Try to let me know as soon as possible so I do not make conflicting plans.

You have my number Leo.
I could meet you where you want.
I'm really looking forward to meeting you sometime.
