I wanted to make this into a double trunk but after cleaning turns out that the split is way too far up the trunk. Would applying a tourniquet just below the split work in thickening the base and putting out roots?

Yes, but an air layer is performed during the spring depending on where you are in the world.

The split is low enough that you could consider a ground layer, where you basically just add additional soil to the top to allow for roots to take hold. The process is otherwise quite like an air layer.

Thats exactly what I have in mind. Tourniquet just below the joint and cover with soil. I think this will work better at swelling the trunk than an air layer.

That’s possibly.

One thing to consider is each trunk is nearly the same size. But it would be good practice all the same.
