Delve into a newbies garden! 😎

One more! Ordered this Japanese elm, 30cm high including pot to give some idea of side. Hard to tell how thick the trunk will be, but I love the general shape.

Had some helpful tips from @BobbyLane (thanks again 😊), will likely go for a chop around here, due to the bulge near the top and generally being drawn more towards smaller trees. Hopefully will be a nice multi trunk in the making!

yeh it could be quite interesting as a multitrunk and you have good options to make directional changes and cuts here n there to get taper in the trunks. the three trunks from one base couldnt be placed any better and you could potentially get more thickening in the base over the years.

Cheers Bobby 😊 The more I look at the trunks the more I love them! Look very aesthetically pleasing to me. Will be fun to try a different style too, haven't any others like this. May well put this one in the grow bed, still lots of space and like you said, a bit more girth would be good 👍🏻

yeh a grow bed on a tile will be great for this, you should get some fattening in the right places as in the base, you should be able to develop great taper with this material.

Hoping to put the hornbeam in the bed tomorrow. Thinking a board will be needed, roots are not ideal from what I can see. I think I need to find something bigger for a board than what I've used for the others. Will be doing a chop too (and sealing!) Here it is from a few angles, and a virt of Yannick's chop suggestions.

Also need to repot the potentilla (assuming around now is a good time as it's budding?) Will probably put it into the hornbeam pot until it's a bit developed. Was going to go for just akadama, good choice? I know they're thirsty buggers.
looks like youre having fun with all these, youre learning fast!:D:cool:

a litte inspiration for your elm, whos to say you couldnt develop something like this in time. only difference with yours is the main trunk will be the right one but the base and the taper is achievable

as are the angles and movement. this is also a Japanese elm from windybank in surrey.

Having a lot of fun! Dived into the hobby, learning a lot from the forum 😊

Love that elm! Thanks for sharing, really good inspiration and great movement and taper. Very similar shape. Very glad I went for it, eagerly awaiting its arrival!

Today's graft!

The potentilla, I'm really happy with! Huge fan of it. Annoyed I didn't get a photo of the roots further into the work - they're actually really well spread! A lovely surprise. Popped it in this pot to grow out a bit for now - hopefully a proper pot next time. Sorry for the crappy photos, it was dark and I was tired 😴

The hornbeam's roots however provided more challenge than my knowledge/skills/tools were up to I think, but I certainly did my best 😂

Things shaping up nicely in the garden! Few posts coming up of what I've been up to.

Here's the grow beds currently, filling up nicely!

Yesterday I put the corkscrew Hazel and classy s shaped elm in the grow beds (lol). The Hazel is just for fun, roots were awful so not sure if it'll survive tbh.

The s shaped elm, I'm pondering what to do with it! Think a broom would be the best bet. The roots are er interesting 😂

Few buds starting to show on the Euonymus. Ideally I'd repot, look at those roots! But only chopped recently so it'll have to wait I think.

Few that still need repotting (or in the grow bed).

-3 fuchsia, got rid of that long eye poking branch on the chunker. Second two from @AJL
The third - can't unsee the letter 'F' - sorry @AJL 😂

-Nightmare field maple!

-Styrax japonica - I don't thing it NEEDS repotting (need to check for sure) but I'd like to put it in a nicer pot. May slip pot if repot not needed.

-Hibiscus with very strange roots. Will probably have as a pot plant in front garden

Not sure what to do with this one-

Prunus serrulata - grafted... Maybe plant in front garden? Attached photo of garden, not sure if it'd be good anywhere here, very small and North-East facing? Going to be adding stone edging to the left side too btw.
